DUTIES:

Under direct but not constant supervision and working on a rotating shift, to patrol, attend, and make adjustments and repairs to all steam-electric power plant equipment and, in this connection, to perform work such as:

  • Patrol boilers, turbines, generators, and auxiliary systems equipment such as pumps, heat cycle equipment, coal handling and pulverizers and electrical switchgear, including transmission switchgear.
  • As directed, perform electrical switching and valving, place or remove Workmen's Protection Assurance tags and other operating duties required in connection with removing equipment from service and returning equipment to service.
  • As directed, personally observe starting and operating conditions of equipment; make special inspections, reports and corrections as required.
  • Operating bottom ash sluicing, fly ash and pyrites systems as required or as assigned.
  • Make adjustments when equipment becomes faulty while operating or is available for operation in an attempt to insure continuous operation of the unit.
  • Read and record routine and special operating data when required.
  • Check lubrication of all equipment and make such emergency lubrication as necessary.
  • Patrol the coal receiving area when coal handling crew is not on duty.
  • Patrol water treatment systems and make adjustments necessary to keep these systems in continuous operations.
  • Perform, as required, internal cleaning on or off load of equipment such as boilers, ash pits, hoppers, coal reclaiming and silo fill systems, condensers, hotwells, precipitators, etc.
  • Attend Demineralizers used in the treatment of water (except at Sioux Plant). Clean spills as necessary to maintain safety of personnel and equipment.
  • Drive motor vehicle when required to perform duties.
  • Check condenser tubes for leakage and plug those tubes found to be leaking. Use instruments, such as hand held vibration indicators, tachometer, strobe light, pyrometers and other such devices required to establish operating conditions.
  • Use tools, equipment, and/or materials necessary to make temporary and/or permanent repairs, to permit progress in the operation of equipment during startup or emergency operation, and to keep equipment in service or protected from failure or damage.
  • Adjust packing on valves and pumps.
  • The Production Operating Engineer (POE) will assist the technicians or other Production Operating Engineers on shift when necessary to hold ladders, provide lighting, general aid of a non-technical nature, or as directed by a Unit Operating Engineer, Chief Operating Engineer or Operating Supervisor.
  • Participate as a member of the ERT/HAZMAT. As such he will be required to wear protective bunker gear and HAZMAT protective suits along with a SCBA. Production Operating Engineers will perform and/or assist with maintenance work as required.
  • POEUs may be assigned the duties and responsibilities of the Unit Operating Engineer job.
  • Do similar and less skilled work as required.

SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

For proceeding in emergencies or maintain as near normal operating conditions as possible until a supervisor, Chief Operating Engineer or Unit Operating Engineer is available to advise.

For observing and reporting any faulty operation of equipment so that damage or emergencies can be prevented.

For exercising care and accuracy in switching and valving operations, and the placing and removing of Workmen's Protection Assurances.

For careful use and custody of Company vehicles when used. Fill out appropriate vehicle use and report forms.

For safe working techniques to prevent injury to himself/herself and/or fellow workers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposed to sudden temperature extremes ranging from high boiler room temperature to low outdoor temperatures, and to the noise and dust, dirt, fumes, and drafts when working around operating or idle power plant equipment. Will work for periods of time alone.

HAZARDS:

Exposed to the hazards common to a power plant wherein high voltage, rotating equipment, and high pressure steam lines and boilers are involved, subject to hazard of shock or burns while working on or near energized equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Shall have a high school education or shall have passed the high school equivalency examination.
  • Must have an Ameren UE Maintenance Journeyman background or must demonstrate equivalent knowledge and performance. The company may designate which Journeyman background (Electrician, Machinist, Repairman) is required.
  • Shall possess good judgment, resourcefulness and steadiness, be precise and careful, be able to make decisions quickly when necessary and act promptly on decisions when necessary.
  • Must be able to climb ramps, ladders, and stairs, have no fear of height, have no trouble working in close places.

Hourly Pay:

Grade Step OA 105 Step 1 of 1 (Top Step) - 55.20 USD
