SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS
The Mechanic Assistant supports lead mechanics in the inspection, diagnosis, and repair of heavy-duty trucks, trailers, forklifts, and industrial machinery.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Follow checklists and instructions provided by lead mechanics
- Assist mechanics with the inspection, diagnosis, and repair of heavy-duty trucks, trailers, forklifts, and industrial machinery.
- Safely operate service vehicles and assist in moving trucks or equipment as needed.
- Operate diagnostic tools and assist in interpreting results (e.g., multimeters, engine diagnostic software)
- Use hydraulic jacks or hoists to lift equipment or components safely
- Help inspect systems such as brakes, steering, transmission, and engines
- Perform basic maintenance tasks such as oil changes, battery checks, and lubrication of equipment
- Assist with wheel alignment, tightening fasteners, and assembling system components
- Replace or help repair faulty parts, such as tires, valves, and electrical components
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment
- Participate in the action planning process as needed
- Able to perform the job with limited supervision
- Maintain reliable attendance in accordance with Rex Standards
- Work effectively in an industrial environment and contribute to a team-oriented culture
- Perform all other duties assigned by supervisor
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- 1-3 years of basic mechanical knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, air brakes, and electrical systems preferred
- Willingness to learn and be trained on diagnostic software and specialized tools
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn computer-based diagnostic tools and electronic repair manuals
- Proficient in the safe and effective use of hand and power tools
- Strong attention to detail with solid troubleshooting skills.
- Good communication and teamwork skills abilities, with a willingness to learn and take direction from senior mechanics
- Understand basic machine components and operation, including working around moving mechanical parts and vibrations
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Perform tasks such as walking, climbing, or standing for long periods of time
- Able to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, or reach with body, arms, and/or legs
- Ability to work outside in all conditions
- Ability to operate safely in day or night-time conditions
- Must be comfortable working around loud equipment
- Able to work while in a fall protection harness at heights over 4 feet
- Able to lift 50 lbs throughout work shift
SAFETY
- Must be able to follow all safety rules and regulations
- Wear all required personal protective equipment, i.e., hardhat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and reflective wear
- Report immediately all accidents, near-misses, property damage, equipment damage, or unsafe conditions
- Use proper lifting technique at all times
