Field Engineer - FAN Survey

Job Summary:

The Field Engineer will be responsible for conducting on-site surveys and assessments to support the design and deployment of a Field Area Network (FAN). This role plays a critical part in gathering accurate field data, identifying installation challenges, and supporting the overall network design and planning process.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform field surveys at utility sites to collect data on physical infrastructure, environmental conditions, and installation feasibility.

Evaluate potential locations for wireless network equipment such as routers, relays, antennas, poles, and enclosures.

Document site conditions with photos, measurements, GPS coordinates, and detailed field notes.

Coordinate with engineering teams to translate field findings into actionable design inputs.

Identify hazards, obstructions, and access issues that may impact installation or performance.

Ensure surveys meet safety standards, permitting requirements, and utility-specific guidelines.

Communicate findings and recommendations through formal survey reports and digital mapping tools (e.g., GIS).

Support construction and installation teams with as-needed field validation or re-surveys.

Qualifications:

Associate or Bachelor s degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field (or equivalent work experience).

2+ years of field engineering, utility surveying, or telecom deployment experience.

Familiarity with utility infrastructure, RF equipment, and wireless communications systems.

Proficient with survey tools (laser rangefinders, GPS, digital cameras, mapping software).

Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, pole maps, and network schematics.

Strong attention to detail, documentation skills, and comfort working in outdoor field environments.

Valid driver s license and ability to travel frequently within the utility territory.

Preferred:

Experience with FAN, AMI, SCADA, or utility communication network deployments.

Knowledge of NESC, OSHA standards, and local utility safety protocols.

GIS or AutoCAD experience a plus.
