The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a dependable and skilled Maintenance Mechanic 3 to support both maintenance and facility operations across the I-90 corridor. This position will play a vital role in winter operations and will be responsible for maintaining and repairing safety rest areas and area facilities, including Camp Mason, Hyak, Easton, Bullfrog, and Ellensburg. A primary focus will be on ensuring the safe and effective operation of our three major rest areas: Traveler's Rest, Indian John, and Rye Grass. By performing essential repairs and maintenance tasks, this role directly supports WSDOT's mission to provide a safe, reliable, and efficient transportation system. What to Expect

This position performs work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and will work with electrical hazards/energized electrical equipment and stored energy. Working conditions may also include uneven terrain, confined spaces such as attics and crawl spaces, around electrical panels, fixtures, wiring, switches and may be at elevated heights, above 8 feet. Typically works Monday-Thursday from 6:00am to 4:30pm summer scheduling, with winter schedules varying 4/10's to accommodate required 24/7 coverage.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Maintenance Mechanic will:

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance of the building, fenced off area and cooling system, and inspect for weed control, sidewalks.
  • Perform snow and ice control on 2 interstate freeways and 3 secondary highways.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on all facility buildings and structures.
  • Make repairs and remodel buildings; frame walls, rafters, and roofs; hang and tape drywall; finish, paint interior and exterior finishes; install countertops, build custom fit cabinets, desks, bookcases, worktables and benches.
  • Install, maintain, and repair pipes, valves, drains, basins, faucets, lavatories, air conditioning units, gates, hydrants and concrete work.
  • Operate Commercial Driver License (CDL) equipment, dump trucks, truck/trailer combos, vactor, frontend loaders, bucket truck and other types of lifts.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Two (2) years of experience performing a skilled trade related to the construction field: carpentry, framing, siding, roofing, concrete flat work and minor electrical and plumbing.
  • A Class B CDL with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction, or the ability to obtain one within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Knowledge of wells and pumping systems.
  • Knowledge of sewer systems, sewer lagoons with pumps and septic drain fields.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of heavy equipment used for road maintenance.
  • Skills to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with the public, supervisor, coworkers, and customers.
  • Skills to enter data on computer as this position is required to capture work completion and associated labor tracking via a PC or iPad.
  • Ability to write estimates and draw and read plans for construction of facilities.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL medical card.
  • Ability to manipulate and transport up to 50 pounds of equipment and/or tools.
  • Ability to respond to non-scheduled, call-out emergencies on weekends and/or holidays.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and hazardous situations such as heavy traffic and hot surface temperatures.
  • Ability to work from heights greater than 8' feet from ground surface.
  • A valid driver's license.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate, or the equivalent.

  • The salary range listed includes the legislative approved general wage increase of 3%, effective on July 1, 2025.
  • Travel is regularly required within the maintenance area to conduct work activities or to attend meetings or trainings. Occasional travel is also required outside of the area for trainings, conferences, or meetings.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
