We are seeking a highly skilled Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) / Highway Design Engineer to join our North American design and engineering team. This position will serve as the lead designer for MOT and construction staging, supporting large-scale complex highway and interchange projects across the U.S and Canada. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in developing traffic management strategies and temporary traffic control plans, with a deep understanding of highway design principles and construction phasing. This role requires close coordination with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and clients to ensure safe, efficient, and constructible MOT solutions are delivered throughout all phases of project development and execution. This position requires travel within Canada and US.
Job Description
Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and design of Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and construction staging plans for complex highway capacity improvement projects.
- Utilize engineering design software and guide CAD designers to prepare comprehensive MOT and construction phasing plans and associated deliverables for bid-design.
- Collaborate closely during both pursuit and execution phases to develop feasible and innovative MOT solutions that enhance safety and minimize disruption.
- Ensure that all MOT and staging plans are constructible, cost-effective, and compliant with relevant federal, state, and local transportation agency standards.
- Develop detailed traffic control plans, including temporary signage, striping, channelization devices, detour routes, and lane shifts tailored to specific construction sequences.
- Participate in coordination meetings with design disciplines, construction teams, and client stakeholders to ensure MOT strategies are fully integrated with overall project goals.
- Review and validate MOT and staging plans prepared by other team members to ensure consistency with project requirements and regulatory standards.
- Deliver accurate, complete, and timely MOT design packages, with responsibility for meeting all milestone deadlines and quality benchmarks.
Required Skills and Competencies
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil/Transportation Engineering
- Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in Highway design and Maintenance of Traffic (MoT) design experience required
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred with ability to get P.Eng. within a year
- Experience working with alternative design delivery projects (Design Build, P3, etc.)
- Familiarity with AASHTO, Roadside Design Guide, MUTCD and other relevant design standards
- Experience preparing designs for large linear infrastructure engineering projects
- Proficient with Bentley OpenRoads Designer (ORD), Microstation, Inroads, AutoDesk Civil3D and Bluebeam
