Job Description:

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Officer is responsible for implementing, updating, and coordinating a wide range of safety and environmental programs, policies and procedures, including general occupational and laboratory safety, hazardous materials, hazardous waste management and disposal to include biological, chemical, physical, radiological and environmental health and safety hazards., industrial hygiene, chemical safety and biological safety, radiant safety and emergency preparedness. The EHS Officer serves as the facilitator for compliance with OSHA/PESH, EPA, DEC, DOL, SEMO, NYSDOHS, FEMA, NYS Building Code and SUNY System Administration. The EHS Officer is responsible for reviewing and interpreting federal and state safety, toxic and hazardous materials guides and regulations and will conduct onsite inspections of campus facilities to identify deficiencies; make recommendations for compliance with safety and health regulations.

  • Serves as the Right to Know officer for the campus; maintains safety data sheets and all other material for the NYS Right to Know and Federal Hazard Communication standard, implementing training programs for new staff; regulating the use of toxic systems and safe handling of materials. Acts as liaison with regulatory agencies and administrative personnel regarding provisions set forth in law. Responsible for monitoring and implementing the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and in other related laws; provide training and support service in matters dealing with health and safety issues on campus. Will schedule, assist and / or conduct required training and maintain appropriate records to ensure compliance with but no limited to Right to know, laboratory safety, bloodborne pathogens, confined space, lockout/tagout, trenching safety and NIMS program. Participates in coordinating the removal of hazardous and regulated medical waste and conduct facility-wide inspections as necessary, maintain associated records and prepare reports. Responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable standards, rules and regulations regarding residence halls, hazardous waste storage areas and air quality
  • Implements, coordinates, and updates a wide range of safety and environmental programs, policies and procedures, including general occupational and laboratory safety, hazardous materials, hazardous waste management and disposal, industrial hygiene, chemical safety and biological safety, radiation safety and emergency management. Performs Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) audits and inspections. Monitors and communicates regulatory requirements impacting institutional operations, goals and objectives. Performs safety and environmental compliance inspections of university laboratories and work areas including chemical and biosafety, air and exhaust handling safety, radiation safety and industrial hygiene concerns. Ensures follow-up activities for correction of deficiencies. Provides training programs for employees on workplace safety, hazard recognition, and proper use of PPE. Ensuring compliance with federal, state, and SUNY regulations regarding occupational health and safety. Incident investigation: Investigating workplace accidents and near misses related to occupational health hazards. Prepare reports documenting findings from inspections, exposure monitoring, and risk assessments to relevant stakeholders. Work with different departments on campus to identify and address specific safety concerns within their operations.
  • In collaboration with Human Resources to implement and carry out policies on work related illness and injuries of employees to include the monitoring of investigations and follow up on work related accidents; Investigate injuries and near miss injuries to determine contributing factors and to make recommendations that will reduce the risk of re-occurrence.
  • Serves as the code coordinator of campus. Review construction permits, fire safety inspections of building and shall investigate all complaints alleging the existing in violation of the code. Serves as Campus Emergency Manager preparing reports, updates, and training as required by FEMA, SEMO and system administration. Serves as the PAD AED Program Coordinator, the campus Opioid Overdose Prevention Director, and manages campus Pesticide Control Program. Coordinate respirator fit tests for employees included in the College's Respiratory Protection Program. Coordinate hearing testing for employees included in College's Hearing Protection Program; coordinate Hepatitis B vaccinations for employees noted in the College's Exposure Control Program as having Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens. Conduct on-site inspections of campus facilities; conduct fire training, inspect fire equipment, maintenance and operation procedures for safety systems. Assists with Campus Fire Safety Report annual updates on the "Campus Emergency Response Plan", Department of Homeland Security Chemicals of Interest, Anti-Terrorism Standard and the DEC Environmental Audit reports; work with University Police on all Fire / Safety violations and investigations that may come from such. Prepare and coordinate contracts with vendors for services such as Fire Alarm testing and Pest Control.

  • Bachelor's degree from college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization
  • 3-5 years of experience
