General Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARYUnder general supervision, performs skilled carpentry work in the construction, renovation, and maintenance of County buildings. Repairs wooden furniture, cabinets, equipment, and fixtures in County buildings. Reports to Supervisor III.

Duties for this Position

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESThe intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job. Incumbents may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
  • Performs complex carpentry duties in the construction of new County buildings. Duties include assisting in clearing job site, "laying off" for building, digging foundation, framing building, setting windows and doors, roofing the building, boxing in the building, finishing the outside of the building, etc.
  • Performs carpentry duties in the renovation and maintenance of County buildings, including the repair of wooden furniture, cabinets, desks, and other equipment and fixtures.
  • May supervise Trades Workers, performing such duties as instructing; assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; and allocating personnel.
  • Maintains various records and prepares various documents including material lists, vehicle mileage sheets, billing statements for pricing, etc.
  • Utilizes various types of tools and equipment in the performance of activities including a truck, backhoe, jackhammer, power tools, carpenter's tools, and related supplies.
  • Interacts and communicates with immediate supervisor, co-workers, County employees, etc.

Position Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma and three to five years of practical training and experience in carpentry and construction, etc.; or any equivalent combination of education of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must possess a valid S.C. driver's license.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including hand and power tools, vehicles, heavy machinery, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to thirty pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for periods of time and perform manual tasks.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 150 pounds.
  • Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information.
  • Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisor.
  • Requires ability to read a variety of work orders, blueprints, codes, policy and procedure manuals, etc.
  • Requires the ability to prepare routine reports, logs, etc, with proper format.
  • Requires the ability to speak with and before others with clarity, voice control and confidence.
  • Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.
  • Requires the ability to learn and understand principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
  • Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.
  • Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with supervisors and co-workers.
  • Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time and weight.
  • Must be able to use practical applications of elementary geometry.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes using specialized machinery; to operate motor vehicles.
  • Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, tools, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches, etc. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Requires the ability to read maps and to visually read information. Must have ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency, unusual or dangerous situations, or in situations in which working speed and sustained attention are make or break aspects of the job.
  • The worker may be subject to danger or risk to a moderate degree.
  • Has considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of skilled carpentry work.
  • Is able to operate, service, and repair a variety of machines and equipment.
  • Has working knowledge of the principles and methods of building construction.
  • Is able to follow oral and written instructions. Is able to complete required forms and reports efficiently and in a timely manner.
  • Is able to perform work in a safe and prescribed manner.
  • Has the ability to pay constant attention to the details of carpentry work.
  • Is able to complete require mathematical calculations accurately.
  • Is knowledgeable of the terminology used within the department.
  • Has the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, other County employees, etc.
  • Has the ability to apply common sense understanding in performing tasks, and is able to use independent judgment in routine situations.
  • Is able to instruct and supervise the activities of Trades Workers assigned to carpentry work.
  • Has the ability to perform required duties and responsibilities in adverse weather conditions such heat, cold, wetness, and humidity.
  • Has the ability to offer assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required.
  • Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
