Purpose & Overview
Perform semi-skilled carpentry, masonry, concrete, painting, plumbing, welding, fabrication, and electrical tasks in the construction, repair, and maintenance of City buildings, facilities and equipment.
Employment Standards
General Responsibilities
- Performs rough and finish carpentry work in all phases of construction, remodel, maintenance, repair, and demolition. Install and repair doors, windows, walls, ceilings, casings, and trim. Install and repair building envelope, siding, foundation, roofing, insulation. Performs site prep, cleanup, and site maintenance. Material handling, distribution, and delivery to individual jobsites.
- Reads, interprets and constructs according to blueprints, drawings, codes, and specifications. Interprets dimensions, scales, grades, elevations, and symbols. Understanding the tolerances and fits. Understanding of common drawing views.
- Does minor electrical work such as installing simple wiring, and connections. Installs, repairs, or replaces switches, sockets, wall plugs, floor receptacles, light bulbs, or fixtures, fuses and breakers. May assist licensed contractor in repairs.
- Repairs or replaces leaky faucets, pipes, toilets, sinks, water heaters, and drains. May assist licensed contractors in repairs.
- Performs routine and preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment such as greasing, oiling, and replacing worn or defective parts. Maintains logs of maintenance and repairs performed.
- Constructs park structures, playgrounds, safety equipment, fixtures, and fences, which may include basic welding and fabrication requirements.
- Performs concrete and masonry work. Forming, pouring, floating, and finishing. Minor concrete demolition and repairs. Saw cutting, rebar installation, tuckpointing, and minor masonry repairs.
- Maintains workshop and shop equipment in good operating condition. Maintains cleanliness, organization and housekeeping throughout shop, vehicles, and equipment. Maintains tools in safe and efficient working order. Reports and damages, defects, or flaws.
- Performs all duties within city ordinance and code compliance. Follows all safety regulations, PPE, industry safety standards, and department implemented protocols. Implements and maintains public safety measures and awareness on jobsites. Work with City Building Inspection on code compliance and job phase inspections during projects.
- Inspects facilities and equipment for safe and efficient operation, repairing as necessary.
- Documents inspections and keeps records of maintenance, repair, and recommendations of preventative maintenance and cost-saving strategies.
- May coordinate the work of staff assigned to assist in a project including seasonal staff. May need to coordinate with other department superintendents and foreman on specific projects.
- May provide vacation or other temporary relief for other classes in Division as required with proper training.
- Working at heights, operates a bucket truck, lift, or uses ladders for various tasks, such as replace lighting, repairing siding/roofs, or bridge repairs and inspections.
- Removes snow from city lots, paths, sidewalks, and streets/alleys using a pickup truck with a plow or a dump truck with a plow and wing.
- Sets up road/lane closures for special events and in compliance with state federal regulations.
- Attends and participates in various meetings such as monthly crew meetings, trainings, or project kickoff meetings, an on-site coordination settings.
- Recommends and/or coordinates repairs and equipment replacement in City facilities with contractors or other City departments.
- Performs related duties as required including the tasks defined in the lower rated job class.
Knowledge
Working knowledge of:
- Basic methods, materials and tools used in the building maintenance trades.
- Basic math skills.
- Occupational hazards and the safety precautions for performing maintenance and construction worker tasks.
Skills
- Make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
- Ability to pivot from job to job.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
Ability
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Use and care for standard hand and power tools utilized in the building trades.
- Safely work in changing environments and conditions.
- Operate multi-purpose motorized equipment in a safe, thorough, effective, and efficient manner.
- Follow oral and written instructions, including from blueprints or design sketches.
- Work in cramped, confined surroundings at heights, or ladders, or lifts.
- Perform heavy manual labor.
- Establish and maintain working relationship with co-workers, supervisors, and others contacted in performing the duties and responsibilities.
- Work under adverse weather conditions.
- Safely team lift up to 100 pounds.
- Perform the physical requirements of this position.
Requirements/Special Requirements
Requires
Two years of experience of either general building maintenance work or in any of the building trades.
It is preferred that the employee possess and maintain the National Playground Safety Institute Certification with one year of appointment to the position.
Employees must possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within one year of employment.
Must pass drug and alcohol testing as directing by federal, state, Department of Transportation (DOT) and city policy.
Prior to hire
Post job offer, candidates must pass the required medical exam for the specified occupation group and drug screen.
Employees with a CDL will be subject to drug and alcohol testing as prescribed by U.S. Department of Transportation standards, and required to register with the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse for the City to conduct a full CDL query.

Position Characteristics
Reporting Lines
Reports to the Facilities, Maintenance & Construction Superintendent and the Maintenance & Construction Working Foreman, and collaborates with other City departments.
No Direct Reports
Position Conditions
Work is performed generally outdoors and in potentially poor weather conditions.
Work reporting location is 2301 Hill Avenue.
Potential exposures include all hazards common in construction and maintenance environments including but not limited to dust, loud sounds, traffic, and uncomfortable heat or cold.
Candidates must be able to climb, stand, stoop and team lift up to 100 pounds.
Work is generally performed on weekdays during normal working hours, however may be required to respond and work after hours, on-call.
