Senior Structural Engineer
Position Summary:
The Senior Structural Engineer performs independent, complex engineering work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of engineering techniques, standards, and procedures. This role involves devising innovative approaches to solve challenging technical problems within a global business unit.
Responsibilities:
Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering work, typically within a single discipline.
Resolve challenging design constraints and materials limitations with new engineering solutions.
Utilize Company Standards and industry-standard 2D and 3D CAD/CAE tools.
Prepare equipment/work specifications, bid evaluations, and award recommendations.
Coordinate engineering efforts with other disciplines, clients, suppliers, and contractors.
Resolve constructability issues and ensure compliance with project requirements.
Lead technical tasks or subgroups as delegated.
Mentor and train junior engineers and assist with their performance evaluations.
Prepare vendor/client correspondence and review bid analyses.
Assist with conceptual studies, technical reports, and design proposals.
Perform original design and problem analysis.
Contribute to cost estimating, quantity take-offs, and staffing projections for proposals and project changes.
Review and verify the work of subordinate engineers.
Foster an inclusive work environment promoting teamwork, trust, and innovation.
Job Knowledge Requirements:
Expert knowledge of structural engineering systems, calculations, and techniques.
Deep understanding of engineering department procedures and company design guides.
Awareness of constructability and practical application of construction methods and materials.
Proficient in CAD (2D and 3D), CAE, and standard software tools.
Familiar with engineering planning/control systems and methods.
Understanding of multi-disciplinary roles in projects and construction economics.
Comprehensive knowledge of relevant industry codes, standards, and design criteria.
Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
Job Dimensions:
Supervision Received:
Works independently on most tasks, with general direction.
Receives technical support on unusual issues and approval for proposed project strategies.
Supervision Exercised:
Directs and delegates technical tasks to junior engineers, designers, and support staff.
Contacts:
Independently communicates with vendors, field personnel, and client representatives.
Qualifications & Skills:
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in an engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
Minimum 9 years of relevant engineering experience.
Professional Engineering license from a recognized board.
Completion of sufficient specialized coursework in engineering disciplines.
Demonstrated experience in design engineering or equivalent roles.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in greenfield or brownfield projects across any of the following industries:
Natural gas processing (liquefaction and regasification)
Coal, gas, or biomass chemical conversion (e.g., methanol, ammonia)
Petrochemical production (HDPE, LDPE, MEG, PET, PTA, PVC, etc.)
Carbon capture and storage
Renewable and combined cycle power generation
Hydrogen infrastructure (reforming, liquefaction, transport, fueling stations)
Offshore/onshore pipeline projects
Water treatment facilities (desalination, demineralized, waste treatment)
Familiarity with licensors and technologies for the above sectors.
Additional Qualifications:
Broad industry knowledge and cross-discipline coordination skills.
Able to execute standard discipline engineering tasks with minimal oversight.
Strong awareness of precedents and best practices in the specialty area.
