Heating and Refrigeration Technician
LOCATION: Maintenance and Operations
REPORTS TO: Executive Director, Supervisor of Maintenance and Operations
COMPENSATION: Determined by license and/or training based on BOSS Collective Agreement

Wayne-Westland Community Schools is located in the metropolitan Detroit area, between Ann Arbor and Detroit. Our staff provides the very best educational opportunities for approx. 10,000 students from Westland, Wayne, Canton, Livonia, Garden City, Dearborn Heights, Inkster, and Romulus. The Wayne-Westland Community School district is comprised of ten elementary schools (K-5), three middle schools (6-8), and two high schools (9-12). We also have an early childhood center, an ultra-modern facility for career/technical training, an alternative high school, and a thriving online program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
Receives instructions and directions from the Executive Director of Maintenance, Maintenance Coordinator or Department Leader
Does various types of HVAC work as assigned
Cleans equipment and work area at the completion of the job or work day
Complies with all safety factors required for the job
Installs, repairs, and maintains all HVAC and other related components in accordance with local applicable codes related to HVAC. These would include such work as installations, alterations, repairs and preventative maintenance of heating and cooling ventilation and temperature control
Installs, repairs, and maintains all HVAC and other related components in accordance with applicable codes. These would include supply and return piping, all supply and return pumps, all hot water, gas supply lines to main gas train, and air lines
Alters work schedules to conform with prevailing weather conditions
Responsible for recording labor and material used to complete the job (includes use of computers for work order system)
Works with other members of the Department
Does snow removal on voluntary basis
Requisition maintenance parts needed for repairs
Skilled in combustion adjustments, boiler cleaning, boiler tune up for hot water & steam boilers
Working knowledge of Metasys for operator override of DDC system for repair/testing purposes
Working knowledge of line electrical systems & safety circuits used in HVAC equipment
Maintenance associated with chiller tubes, cooling towers, ice machines
Does related work as assigned
Regular and predictable attendance
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma, GED, or equivalent
Journeyman Heating and Refrigeration License (Reciprocal) or Contractor's License preferred
Experience in Pipefitting dealing with industrial/commercial and heating/cooling systems (preferred).
Five (5) years experience in the HVAC field
Must have experience in all phases HVAC: maintenance, building alterations and construction
Must have a minimum of sixteen (16) hours of Asbestos Awareness Training
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must be eligible to work in the United States
Must have specific knowledge of current HVAC codes
Can interpret prints, sketches, specifications and oral instructions
Must be familiar with the Michigan Right-To-Know Laws
Reads blueprints or schematic drawings to determine locations, size capacity and type of components, such as compressors, condensers, expansion tank, valves and tubing or piping needed to build refrigeration system
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to move around the District and occasionally remain in a stationary position. The employee frequently is required to inspect equipment and use the necessary tools to repair that equipment. The employee must also be able to position self to work on HVAC Units. The employee must frequently move up to 50 lbs and/or individually push or pull up to 100 lbs. Individual must be able to inspect equipment from all distances and be aware of surroundings. The employee must occasionally determine where sounds are coming from and detect noises. Employee must pass all District and Federal pre-employment requirements.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with staff and occasionally with students and the public. The employee is directly responsible for the maintenance of all district HVAC.

Job performance is evaluated in accordance with district guidelines.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The hourly rate, length of the workday and the number of workdays is based on the MEA/B.O.S.S. collective bargaining agreement.
