Career Opportunity

The city of the Las Vegas invites applications for Equipment Operator I. This position assists in performing semi-skilled labor in the construction or maintenance of parks, streets, sewers and sanitation facilities; and operates required equipment and vehicles. Operates vehicles with GVW over 26,000 pounds, such as 10-wheel dump truck.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the entry level class in the Equipment Operator series. This class is distinguished from the Equipment Operator II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled labor activities. Since this class is typically an entry level class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

Supervision Received

Receives direct supervision from higher level staff.

Type of Examination
A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. T he supplemental questions are the examination . Falsification of information may result in disqualification from recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date. The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list and must be worked on individually by the applicant only. The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list.

Eligible List: You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.

Selection Process
Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include a hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks.

Note: Effective with pay period beginning July 20, 2025, employee pay rates will be reduced by 1.625% due to increase in NVPERS contribution.

Essential Functions:

  1. Operates a variety of construction and maintenance equipment and power tools including dump trucks, light trucks, water trucks, patch trucks, paving machine, compressors, jackhammers, pneumatic and vibrating tampers, propane powered equipment, sand-blasters, concrete saws and other equipment as assigned.
  2. Assists in performing semi-skilled labor in the construction or maintenance of streets, sewers, parks and other areas as assigned.
  3. Loads or assists in loading various materials into truck; secures load and any tools; hauls various materials on designated routes to specified areas; documents load weight and obtains weight tag; dumps load at specified areas.
  4. Works as part of a maintenance crew; performs general and dust maintenance duties as they relate to roads, sanitary and storm drains; clears and maintains drainage ditches and washers; breaks concrete and asphalt surfaces; digs back filled trenches and holes.
  5. Operates and secures assigned vehicles and other assigned equipment; performs and documents pre-trip inspection; maintains vehicles and equipment in clean and fueled condition.
  6. Cleans and performs preventive maintenance on construction and maintenance equipment.
  7. Utilizes proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
  8. Installs street barricades and cones prior to the performance of repair or maintenance activities; directs and controls traffic around work sites.
  9. Applies chemical insecticides and herbicides as directed.
  10. Maintains a variety of automated and manual logs, records and files.

When Assigned to Parks and Grounds Maintenance Division:

  1. Prunes and plants trees, grass, sod, flowers and shrubs; weeds grounds; rakes leaves; fertilizes, mows, cultivates and trims all landscaped areas.
  2. Maintains city sports and recreational facility grounds, including overseeding activities.
  3. Operates construction and maintenance equipment and power tools such as light dump trucks, light trucks, skid loader and attachments, jackhammers, trenchers, backhoes, propane powered equipment, paint sprayers, sand-blasters, concrete saws, mowers, edgers, blowers and other equipment as assigned; maintains hand or power tools and assigned equipment; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
  4. Provide custodial services for parks and facilities, including cleaning and removal of trash.

Marginal Functions:

  1. Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment.
  2. Cleans shop and restroom area.
  3. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Experience:

One year of general maintenance experience performing field maintenance work within the assigned area of responsibility.

Training:

Equivalent to graduation from high school.

Licenses and Certifications:

As a condition of continued employment, employees must acquire the following certifications by the dates specified.

Possession of an appropriate, valid Class B commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

Within 15 days of initial hire, provide documentation of completion within the last five years of an OSHA-10 course in construction industry safety and health hazard recognition and prevention, developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor. Completion card must be continuously maintained while employed in this classification.

Employee must attend training in work zone safety measures as requested by department management.

Special Requirements :

May be required to respond to emergencies such as storm clean-up or sewer overflow.

Knowledge of:

Methods and techniques of general construction, landscaping, lawn maintenance and general maintenance and repair related to the area of work assigned.
Operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Skills in:

Learning to perform unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned.
Performing a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions.
Performing heavy manual labor.
Working independently in the absence of supervision.
