Description
Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Engineer to work on our Thermal Fluid Systems Methods and Analysis department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.
You will apply thermal engineering principles and methods to design, develop, test, and analyze nuclear equipment and systems. Design, develop test beds and conduct testing to improve understanding of systems and components along with supporting verification and validation needs. This position is part of the INL Nuclear Nexus.
Job Responsibilities:
Work with designers, analysts, and customers to develop experimental requirements and perform the required testing.
Select and widely apply advanced nuclear engineering design principles, theories, and concepts. Decompose project objectives into defined and controlled design requirements.
Use design methodologies, technologies, and processes which are best practice for the technical discipline to develop and define a design, and to validate that the design meets defined requirements.
Document the design (controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, design descriptions) to establish conformance with design requirements and applicable codes and standards.
Establish testing, inspection, and quality requirements to ensure technical features important to design functions are maintained.
Oversee or otherwise ensure that fabrication, construction, assembly, and procurement are done in accordance with the design.
May perform integrated analyses to ensure that experimental requirements and facility safety bases are met.
May perform integrated analyses to ensure that storage, transportation, and disposal requirements and facility safety bases are met.
Defend analytical methods and results in management and independent reviews.
Perform analysis and design tasks supporting project/program interactions with (experiment) sponsors, operations, and engineering organizations to ensure that project related operations are performed in a manner that is consistent with the facility authorization.
Develop physics-based mathematical models of mechanical systems to support and verify design. Develop and improve models and analysis methods.
Prepare reports and peer-reviewed publications.
Represent programs, the Laboratory, and the Division/Department through programmatic and technical presentations to the public, and to the sponsors and peers at conferences and symposia.
Participate in professional development activities aimed at keeping pace with industry developments and increasing proficiency of applications to experiments. Maintain familiarity with and technical understanding of codes and standards applicable to the discipline.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
Level 3: Bachelor's Degree in Nuclear/Mechanical Engineering from an ABET -accredited institution with 5 years relevant experience with thermal energy systems, or Master of Science Nuclear/Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution with 2 years relevant experience with thermal energy systems or a PhD in Nuclear/Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution with 2 years relevant experience with thermal energy systems.
The Ideal Candidate will have experience in the following:
Experience in thermal-hydraulic experiments, from experiment design to data-analytics.
Experience with verification and validation methods of Thermal Hydraulic test facilities and system codes.
Extensive experience in experiment design, data acquisition and processing, and analytics.
High temperature experimental work.
Ability to design, build, and run physical experiments.
Understanding of heat pipes, how they operate, and their role in reactor development including microreactor applications and working with heat pipes experimentally and be able to analyze the data using MOOSE based tools.
Experience designing and building experimental test beds to support deployment of advanced energy systems.
Experience with code development and validation of code for modeling purposes to aid Sockeye development.
Knowledge of the primary phenomenological areas of reactors: two-phase thermal fluid flow, heat transfer in solids, neutron kinetics, and structural mechanics.
Experience with procurements.
Experience with analysis and report writing.
