Definition The City of Colton is now recruiting for one (1) part-time General Laborer in our Public Works Department. This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list for current and future vacancies. The closing date is July 8th, 2025 , or when 50 applications are received, w hichever comes first.
DEFINITION: Under direct supervision, this position requires heavy manual labor in the repair, construction and maintenance of the City and associated facilities. The position is on a short-term/part-time basis.
DISTINGUISHED CHARACTERISTICS: The General Laborer is an unskilled to semi-skilled classification. Incumbents within this classification perform work of a manual nature with similar duties and responsibilities to those of the Maintenance Worker; however, they do so under direct supervision and direction. Essential Functions ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: ( include but not limited to the following ):
  • Perform heavy manual labor in a variety of construction and maintenance work.
  • Dig ditches, trenches, and post holes; backfill trenches; load and unload dirt and construction materials.
  • Install street barricades and cones, conduct traffic control, and install signs and legends.
  • Perform asphalt removal, patching, shovel/rake/assist asphalt installation.
  • Remove concrete, grade area, construct forms; pour/assist finishing concrete/masonry.
  • Clean debris from storm drains, catch basins, sewers, streets, parking lots and walkways.
  • Collect and remove refuse and debris; perform janitorial work.
  • Paint sports and park facilities, buildings, equipment and piping.
  • Operate maintenance power tools/saws/mowers/trimmers/paint sprayers and hand tools.
  • Cut grass and weeds; rake and load grass and brush; mow lawns and clean grounds; assist in planting, watering, and caring for shrub and flowers.
  • Assist in maintaining and preparing athletic fields including hand grading, filling, and shaping of baseball diamonds.
  • Assist building maintenance workers in painting projects, moving furniture and equipment, removing and laying of carpets, and construction or maintenance projects as assigned.
  • Assist other skilled workers in a variety of crafts and trades; may act as flagman when working on City streets; may drive City vehicles, as assigned.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; keep accurate records.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
  • Perform any other tasks or functions deemed necessary to the daily or emergency operations of the employer.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 50 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot, and cold. The incumbent may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals, which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions.

Qualifications Education and/or Experience: Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for a Laborer position. Two years of high school is required.
License/Certificate: Possession of a valid class "C" California driver's license. Additional Information Knowledge of: Perform moderate to heavy manual labor (depending upon assignment). Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Use and purpose of common construction and maintenance tools and equipment.
Ability to: Operate a variety of heavy equipment. Perform construction and maintenance tasks and utilize applicable tools and equipment related to tree-trimming, concrete and brick work, street painting, asphalt work, irrigation systems, ornamental and historical items and other activities related to job assignments. Learn to read and interpret maps, sketches, drawings, basic blueprints, specifications, and technical manuals. Perform labor-intensive manual tasks for extended periods of time. Keep accurate records. Ensure safe working practices. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Skill to: Operate a variety of maintenance equipment on City streets or other City property.

Recruitment and Selection Process

The candidates with the most desired qualifications and that best meet the city's needs will be invited to participate in the Oral Board Interview process. Candidates successful in this process will have their names certified to an eligibility list. This list is valid for one (1) year.
