Pay Range: $73,686.34 to $110,529.64

Actual pay will be based on various factors, such as a candidates qualifications, skills, competencies, proficiency for the role, and internal equity. In addition to base pay, Kwik Trip gives 40% of pre-tax profits back to our coworkers with bonuses ranging from 8-12% of each coworkers gross annual wage depending on company profitability and offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, 401k, paid time off, and more.

Kwik Trip Inc. is seeking a skilled and motivated HVAC Project Engineer to lead the design, coordination, and implementation of HVAC systems across our growing network of retail facilities. In this role, you will manage HVAC-related capital projects, guide contractors and vendors, and ensure that system design and installation align with company standards and operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management and Field Execution

  • Lead HVAC system implementation for new construction, remodels, and facility upgrades.
  • Define project scope, coordinate contractor responsibilities, and manage timelines and budgets.
  • Function as the point of contact for mechanical and test-and-balance vendors throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Perform site visits to ensure quality installation, resolve issues, and verify schedule adherence.

System Design and Engineering Review

  • Oversee HVAC system design reviews, including load calculations and equipment selections.
  • Review mechanical plans and contractor submittals to ensure they meet Kwik Trip performance standards and building codes.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external partners to ensure integration with BAS platforms and energy efficiency goals.

Commissioning and Performance Validation

  • Lead HVAC commissioning efforts and validate system performance.
  • Review test-and-balance reports and participate in field validation of airflow and hydronic systems.
  • Troubleshoot system performance issues and coordinate corrective actions as needed.

Technology Evaluation and Continuous Improvement

  • Research new HVAC technologies and assess their applicability in retail environments.
  • Stay informed on changes in mechanical codes and environmental regulations affecting HVAC design.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to pilot and implement innovative system strategies.

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Collaborate closely with Construction, Retail Operations, Energy Management, and Maintenance teams to align HVAC system performance with operational goals.
  • Troubleshoot HVAC complaints from Retail and provide actionable guidance to internal teams and external contractors for resolution.
  • Provide training and documentation to support startup, maintenance, and vendor coordination.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Preferred: Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, HVAC Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Project Management, or related fields.
  • Preferred: 46 years of experience managing HVAC projects in a commercial, retail, or institutional setting.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to manage HVAC capital projects from design through commissioning.
  • Solid understanding of HVAC system design principles, building automation systems, and energy code compliance.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Trane TRACE 3D, Microsoft Excel, and project scheduling tools.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to lead contractors, coordinate cross-functional teams, and present to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, work independently, and adapt to a dynamic construction environment.

Work Schedule

This position typically operates Monday through Friday, with occasional early morning or evening site visits. Travel is required to support projects across Kwik Trips operational footprint. Average work week is approximately 45 hours, depending on project volume and schedules.
