Organization Overview
The Production Division within Brookhaven National Laboratory's Facility & Operations (F&O) Directorate provides mechanical, architectural, and civil services to build, support and maintain the Lab's infrastructure.
Position Description:
The Production Division, within the Brookhaven National Laboratory's Facilities & Operations (F&O) Directorate seeks an Insulation Worker to join their team. Under general supervision, performs installation and removal of insulation and protective coverings about piping, ductwork, fixtures, and devices as required. Performs limited removal, cleanup and disposal of asbestos insulation in accordance with applicable environmental control standards pursuant to laws and regulations governing BNL. Will be trained and must be New York State licensed certified asbestos abatement worker, supervisor and inspector.
This position reports to the General Mechanical Supervisor. The hours of operation/shift for this position are Monday to Friday 8am-4:30pm.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Measure, cut, and install insulation material to fit around mechanical systems such as HVAC, ductwork, plumbing pipes and industrial equipment
- Apply insulation using hand tools, adhesives, fastens and insulation supports.
- Remove old or damaged insulation and dispose of materials properly.
- Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with safety standards and project specifications.
- Seal and finish insulated surface using tape, mastic or cladding.
- Interpret Blueprints, Schematics, and specifications to determine insulation needs.
- Operate hand and power tools safely and efficiently.
- Coordinate with other trades and team members on-site.
- Perform limited removal, cleanup, and disposal of asbestos materials in accordance with applicable laws.
- Acquire samples of questionable asbestos materials and processes them in accordance to BNL policies and procedures

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- High School diploma or GED.
- Must be able to qualify and maintain qualifications in accordance with New York State asbestos industrial code Rule 56 New York State asbestos licenses supervisor/worker handler and inspector certificates.
- Must pass and maintain all required training related to CC301 insulation and abatement as outlined on BNL's Job Training Assessment (JTA)
- Possess good written and verbal communication skills, including:
- Ability to follow written instruction procedures, work orders, and similar documents.
- Ability to sufficiently write/complete work orders and other required documents.
- Ability to communicate verbally with customers, fellow workers and supervisors
- Possess basic computer skills.
- Must have a telephone and provide the number to BNL for callout and contact purposes.
- Must have a good employment attendance record.
- Must be able to work Monday to Friday 8am-4:30pm, and overtime as needed.
- Possess a valid NYS driver's license.
- Be able to complete all the requirements of the Job Training Assessment.
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
- Must meet the medical requirements of BNL's Job Assessment Form, including but not limited to:
- Pass a respirator fit test and be able to wear/use a respirator and other related safety equipment - i.e. personal protection equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, safety shoes and hearing protection
- Able to do heavy lifting > 30 lbs.
- Able to work in confined spaces
- Able to climb fixed and portable ladders
- Able to work outdoors/cold and warm environments
- Able to move machinery
- Able to use powered and air operate hand-tools
- Have good physical coordination, dexterity and balance
Other Information:
The successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date.
