Job Summary
Kairos Power, LLC is seeking a highly motivated Spent Fuel Storage Design Engineer with expertise relevant to design, development, testing and manufacturing of automated systems for fuel storage equipment. The successful candidate will be a critical member of the KP-FHR Spent Fuel Storage team.
Responsibilities
- Lead the resolution of system wide challenges, engaging with subject matter experts across Kairos Power to deliver solutions.
- Support building layout decisions including sizing estimation, conceptual operations, interface definitions and design envelope development.
- Contribute to make/buy analysis, supplier selections and the development of manufacturing plans.
- Mentor Spent Fuel Storage team members on technical challenges, testing strategies, and conceptual designs.
- Manage external interfaces, both internal and external to Kairos, to meet delivery schedules to support company objectives.
- Support the design and prototyping of critical subsystems of the KP-FHR storage system equipment.
- Engage with manufacturing and operations at the KP-SW campus to support the manufacturing, assembly, and operation of high fidelity and full scall fuel handling equipment.
Qualifications
- BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent with industry fuel handling equipment experience.
- 8+ years of experience.
- Experience leading a team of engineers.
- Experience designing in high radiation environments, including building layout considerations, shielding, material selection, and sensor selection.
- Experience with ASME BPVC design codes
- Experience working in a conceptual design space, developing system requirements, operations, mechanical envelopes, and interfaces.
- Experience interfacing with manufacturing teams and an understanding of manufacturing processes.
- Experience designing for Nuclear, Energy, Defense, or Aerospace applications.
- SolidWorks experience required.
- Experience with high temperature systems is desired

- Ability to work collaboratively with others including, but not limited to Technicians, Engineers and Designers in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design, drawing, test, or manufacturing issues as appropriate to accomplish objectives.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
Physical Demands
- Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, scissor lifts, articulated boom lifts and the like
- Adjusting, moving, transporting, installing, positioning, or removing objects up to 30 pounds in all directions
- Use of machine and hand tools

Travel
- Some travel may be required (up to 20%)
The salary range for this position is $140,600 to $165,400 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California.
