JOB TITLE: CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR

DEPARTMENT: ENGINEERING

NON-EXEMPT: NO

GRADE: F (RATE OF PAY: $27.02)

JOB SUMMARY: The person employed in this capacity will perform his/her duties under the direction of the City Engineer and/or Assistant City Engineer. The purpose of this position is to inspect construction of streets, roads, bridges, and drainage in the City of Jackson and to insure conformity with plans and specifications.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Discussing plans and specifications with contractors and engineers (written and verbal).
  • Inspecting all phases of construction on streets, roads, drainage, and bridges.
  • Reviewing records and correspondence from contractors and engineers.
  • Reviewing plans and specifications to determine adequacy.
  • Maintaining files on construction projects.
  • Checking contractor pay requests for accuracy and approving same.
  • Working with contractors on street resurfacing projects.
  • Identifying areas of needed repairs on existing streets.
  • Meeting with property owners concerning rights-of-way and easements.
  • Evaluating test data to determine compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Making field changes with contractors.
  • Designing and computing quantities on minor repair projects.
  • Insuring the adequacy and functionality of traffic control plans.
  • Developing work schedules.
  • Issuing directives to correct or prevent construction problems.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSE:

  • B.S. degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field or high school diploma with five years of acceptable experience in street, road, bridge and drainage construction and field inspection.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Reading and understanding construction plans and specifications.
  • Knowledge of construction methods and materials.
  • Good math background.
  • Ability to communicate with construction personnel, Engineering personnel and the public.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • To read and understand complex construction drawings and specifications.
  • To tactfully work with construction professionals and the public.
  • Basic computer skills to include word processing, e-mail and spreadsheets.

  • Work is performed mostly in field settings. Considerable outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land use developments, construction sites, or public works facilities. Hand to eye coordination is necessary to operate testing instruments, computers and various pieces of office equipment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
