This is journeyman level work responsible for preventive maintenance and mechanical repairs on all of the County vehicles and equipment.
Generally, the hiring range is $57,496- $71,870 annually. Qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position will be taken into consideration when determining hiring salary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following examples are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive)
- Repairs automotive and heavy construction equipment to include the repair of gasoline and/or diesel engines, repair of electrical systems including lights, wiring and A/C and D/C motors, repair of hydraulic, air cooling and pneumatic systems, and repair and adjustment to drive train and brakes.
- Repairs to snow and ice equipment to include computerized controls, electric over hydraulic controls, sanders, pre-wet and anti-ice liquid systems.
- Inspects defective and malfunctioning equipment and performs diagnostic tests using engine and charging system analyzers, pressure gauges, laptop computers with diagnostic software and other equipment as required.
- Dismantles and repairs internal combustion engines, transmissions, pumps, auxiliary equipment, generators, compressors and clutches.
- Changes lubricants and filters. Performs other preventive maintenance functions as necessary. Performs safety inspections on any/all County equipment.
- Performs service calls in the field. May recommend evacuation of equipment to a primary repair facility or outside vendor. Service calls may also be required after normal shop hours on an on call basis.
- Have or be capable of obtaining certification to service or repair A/C systems and perform heavy duty opacity diesel emissions.
- On call during snow season. This position may provide mechanical support to snow removal operations in shop and sometimes in the field.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISON RECEIVED: Supervision may be minimal at times due to work schedules/loads that may require team members to be sent to other facilities to complete work.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position does not directly supervise other employees.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR: This is routine and complex mechanical work maintaining, diagnosing and repairing vehicles and equipment. Consequence of error may result in equipment or employee down-time, impact the safety of employees, equipment or the public.
INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT: Ability to use past experience and knowledge to make appropriate decisions.
CONTACTS: This position will have contact with County personnel and various vendors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Three years of automotive/diesel mechanical experience, five years preferred.
- Preferred experience with computerized maintenance software.
- Preferred experience with Force Controls.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge:
- Five years of automotive/diesel mechanical experience or any equivalent combination.
Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance manuals, electrical and hydraulic semantics.
Abilities:
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Colorado Driver License upon hire. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment. The ability to possess a State of Colorado Class (A) Commercial Driver License with tanker endorsement after hire. Incumbents in this position must meet the Department of Transportation physical exam and drug and alcohol testing requirements. This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check including fingerprinting through a national database.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Material and Equipment: Tools typically used by journeyman mechanic must be provided by the incumbent.
Physical Demands: Must be able to regularly lift or move more than 100 pounds and perform strenuous physical labor for up to 8-10 hours each day (up to 12 hours during times of snow removal or other circumstances that require extended shifts).
General Work Environment: Work is generally performed in the Fleet shop, but services and repairs may be required to be completed in the field.
AVAILABILITY/ACCESSIBILITY: This position requires the incumbent to remain available via mobile cellular device/email access during and after normally scheduled business hours.

This may mean being available to perform additional duties and hours beyond what is normally required. In the event that an exempt employee does work more than 40 hours a week in support of County operations during an emergency, such employee may receive overtime or other appropriate wage compensation in accordance with existing County policies or at the discretion of the County.
