Job Summary - Painter (Grade: NA09)
Performs interior and exterior painting tasks on surfaces such as buildings, counters, cabinets, and similar structures using standard methods like brushing, rolling, and spraying. Must demonstrate knowledge of specialty finishing techniques such as marbling, mottling, graining, and rubbing down fine-textured finishes.
Duties and Responsibilities
Paints a variety of surfaces based on detailed instructions using accepted coating methods and techniques, including specialty finishes.
Prepares coating materials by blending, tinting, toning, and mixing additives to achieve specific textures, colors, or durability.
Prepares surfaces through sanding, patching, and treatment with pre-coating agents. Utilizes abrasives and burning-in processes to even out dents and achieve a smooth finish.
Builds up and levels surfaces using metal fillers, synthetic resins, plastic compounds, and patching materials.
Ensures the final finish meets specified standards for appearance, texture, thickness, and match quality.
Uses a variety of hand and power tools including:
Brushes, rollers, spray guns
Trowels, straight edges
Viscosity testers and graining devices
Maintains tools and equipment in clean, working condition.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in physically demanding positions.
Frequently lifts and carries materials and tools weighing up to 10 pounds; occasionally handles items 40 pounds or more.
Working Conditions
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.
Frequently exposed to dirt, paint fumes, and sprays.
May be required to work in bad weather or wear heavy protective gear.
Exposure to potential injuries such as cuts, bruises, and falls from ladders or scaffolds is common.
Other Duties
Performs other related duties as assigned.
General Experience
One (1) year of general experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform standard painting techniques including brushing, rolling, and spraying on various surfaces such as buildings, walls, counters, and cabinets.
Substitution of Education for Experience
One year of high school education may be substituted for three (3) months of general experience. A High School Diploma or GED may be substituted for one (1) full year of general experience.
Specialized Experience
Five (5) years of professional painting experience involving:
Surface preparation techniques for various materials
Application of coatings using methods designed for both functional and aesthetic outcomes
Use of specialty techniques such as rubbing down fine-textured finishes, marbling, mottling, and graining
Ability to blend, tint, and tone coating materials with additives to achieve precise finishes
Physical Requirements
Must be able to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, and climb while working in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions.
Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up materials and equipment weighing up to 10 pounds.
Occasionally handles materials and equipment weighing 40 pounds or more.
