The successful candidate will work independently with little supervision. Therefore, the ideal candidate will have strong self-management and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks.
Principal Duties
As the Standards & Statewide Hydraulic Engineer, you will:
- Act as the technical authority on all drainage design and information for UDOT.
- Act at the Standards Committee Secretary overseeing the Standard Specification and Drawing processes.
- Manage and update the applicable Division Manuals.
- Provide guidance on all bridge scour projects and be part of the bridge scour rating committee to ensure that bridges across the state are up to date and safe.
- Provide direction for drainage and stormwater needs for all of UDOT.
- Assess the feasibility of incorporating proposed research findings.
- Coordinate with other UDOT groups for updates to design manuals including making changes to manuals as needed.
- Coordinate activities with other discipline groups and staff in the agency to ensure drainage needs are met.
- Serve as a liaison with other agencies and government entities as needed in all drainage requirements to advocate for a fully functioning drainage system and to protect UDOT assets.
- Possibly participate in the selection of consulting firms.
- Provide training to UDOT staff.
- Participate in site visits when needed.
Minimum Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must:
- Be registered as a professional engineer (PE) in Utah.
- Have at least two (2) years of engineering experience following licensure as a PE.
Preferences
Preference may be given to those with at least one of the following:
- At least four (4) years of experience in hydraulic design and scour analysis and roadway and structure projects.
- Experience in project delivery processes including roadway and hydraulic design.
- Experience in utilization of the Department Specification Writing and Drawing Development Guide.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Here are some of the knowledge, skills and abilities that are typically associated with the job, though not all-inclusive:
- Understanding of UDOTs Project Development process.
- Understanding of UDOTs permit and application process.
- Understanding of UDOTs Project delivery system, and the QC/QA process.
- Good communication skills as well as the ability to work well with others in a team environment.
- The ability to give and take clear verbal or written direction well.
- Manage and coordinate team needs, activities, and/or tasks.

- Working Conditions - Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
- Physical Requirements - Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
- Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
