Job Description:

Applies paint, varnish, wallpaper and similar materials in finishing and decorating interior and exterior surfaces; mixes and blends paints; does hand lettering of signs and posters; uses putty, plaster and other materials in preparing surfaces; performs related work as required.

  • Prepares surfaces for painting by washing, dusting, sanding, puttying and other means.
  • Erects ladders and scaffolding.
  • Mixes and matches paints.
  • Applies paint, stain, varnish, wallpaper and other finishes to surfaces by means of brush or spray equipment.
  • Removes and replaces broken window glass.
  • Cleans brushes and equipment and removes debris from area, which has been finished.
  • May operate self-propelled paint spraying machine to paint traffic lines in roadways.
  • May repair spray guns and other equipment used in spray painting.

Requirements:

Qualifications Required at Hire:

  • Considerable knowledge of the tools, materials, methods and standard practices used in the painting trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods of preparing wood, metal, glass, plaster, cement and other materials and surfaces for painting.
  • Ability to apply paints and other finishes by brush or air gun and to mix and match paints.
  • Ability to climb and work from scaffolding or at some distance above the ground.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written orders without immediate supervision.
  • May be required to possess a Massachusetts Rigger's license when appropriate.

Qualifications Acquired on Job:

  • Increased ability to access and address painting issues as they relate to application in certain situations. Increased knowledge in the use of specialty tools used in painting.
  • Training in campus operating procedures and policies.
  • The ability to work within a team setting.
  • May obtain a Massachusetts Rigger's license.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

  • Should have at least two years of proven success in the painting field.
  • Must have the ability to climb heights without fear.

License and/or Certification Requirements:

  • Massachusetts Rigger's license is appropriate.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, benefitted (Grade 14, Step 1) position in the AFSCME bargaining unit. Bi-weekly salary is $1,969.46.
