THE DISTRICT
The San Rafael Sanitation District is committed to protecting public health and the environment by providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective wastewater collection and conveyance services. Serving residents and businesses in the San Rafael area, the District maintains and improves vital sewer infrastructure including pipelines, pump stations, and treatment connections to support a clean and sustainable community.
As a sewer collection agency, the District maintains 33 pump stations, 13 miles of force main, and 132 miles of gravity sewer pipeline. Each y ear the District replaces over 2.5 miles of gravity sewer as part of the annual CIP project.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The San Rafael Sanitation District is seeking a detail-oriented and technically skilled Construction Inspector to help ensure the quality and safety of our vital sewer infrastructure. As a Construction Inspector, you'll perform field inspections on sewer system projects including pipelines, pump stations, and other capital improvements to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and District regulations.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- Knowledge of construction methods, equipment, terminology, and techniques.
- Knowledge of inspection methods and techniques.
- Ability to work in databases and programs like Excel, Word, and Outlook,
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with contractors, officials, and the public.
- Ability to think on your feet.
- Flexibility and responsiveness in changing situations.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to - view the full job spec HERE)
- Performs field inspection of contract work and ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and enforcement of SRSD regulations on various sewer facilities projects such as, but not limited to, construction and rehabilitation of sewer pipe improvements, pumping stations, and other maintenance and capital improvement projects.
- Performs construction related inspection, which includes installation and compaction of pipe, erosion, checking construction work against specifications and drawings, monitoring traffic flow, and checking existing facilities.
- Reviews drawings, maps, plans, and specifications for maintenance projects, capital improvement projects, and private projects.
- Performs field inspection of lateral connection and tests.
- Recommends field changes on construction work.
- Assists in preparation of progress payments.
- Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports.
- Performs field measurements, calculations, and sketches.
- Assists in the design of plans and specifications.
- Prepares "As Built" plans for construction activities.
- Assists in the updates and maintaining databases; performs field work in order to check discrepancies in computer data, and document existing conditions.
- Performs survey and layout for construction projects.
- Performs related duties as required.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Equivalent to AA degree with specialization in civil engineering or construction management (additional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis up to a total of two years) AND
- Two (2) years of responsible engineering inspection or administrative construction experience is required. Municipal sewer inspection experience is highly desirable.
- Valid California Driver's License

This position is a regular position of the City's SEIU Local 1021 employee group and is eligible to receive benefits including but not limited to:
MEDICAL | City group health coverage, with the City paying a fixed dollar amount toward the cost of the monthly insurance premium: Employee only: $950.00 | Employee plus one: $1,900.00 | Family: $2,400.00
DENTAL | Premium fully paid for employee plus eligible dependents.
VISION | Premium fully paid for employee.
VACATION LEAVE | 10 days annually, increases after 3 years of service
SICK LEAVE | 12 days annually
HOLIDAYS | 12 paid City holidays plus 1 floating holiday per year
