We do this, in part, by developing low-cost, high-quality routes for the manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
Position Primary Purpose and General Duties:
The Medicines for All Institute (M4ALL) at Virginia Commonwealth University is dramatically improving global access to lifesaving medicines. We achieve this mission using an innovative approach to synthesizing drugs and manufacturing pharmaceuticals to enhance production worldwide by reducing costs and waste. We are seeking a Project Manager with strong interpersonal and organizational skills to support the operational excellence of our project management function.
Since our inception in 2017, M4ALL has received over $70 million in funding from federal and state governments, industry partners, foundations and nonprofits. Our team of scientists are reimagining every step of the pharmaceutical manufacturing process. The Project Manager will work collaboratively with a highly experienced team of scientists and business professionals to support the day-to-day management of our current and future projects
Core responsibilities:
Project Execution
Understand customer needs and translate to project scope and timelines, ensuring agreement from both the project team and the customer
Proactively identify, assess, and lead risk mitigation efforts
Led full lifecycle of customer programs, including planning, execution, and closure of customer projects, ensuring on time completion within scope, and budget
Conduct internal and external project team meetings ensuring all collaborators and customers follow agreed upon Project Plan
Organize and delegate tasks to project team members ensuring successful completion
Provide realistic timelines, clarify next steps, and set expectations based on project progress
Coordinate procurement of materials, supplies, and vendors necessary for project completion
Represent the customer project internally, acting as the customers advocate
Ad hoc or other tasks as directed by Associate Director, PMO
10% potential travel required
Project Portfolio Management
Collaborate with the Commercial team ensuring customer satisfaction throughout project lifecycle
Actively maintain and update project trackers and PM tools for all active customer programs
Coordinate multiple project teams, promoting effective communication and collaboration across departments
Manage internal priority based on portfolio of projects, proactively communicate internal priority to appropriate teams
Continuous Improvement and Innovation
Identify process improvements and best practices for project planning and execution
Support efforts to realize process improvements
Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
Engage internal stakeholders capturing requirements, providing updates, and ensuring alignment with project objectives
Monitor and report on project progress, financials, and key performance indicators, ensuring transparency and accountability
Facilitate and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external key stakeholders and sponsors to support collaboration and the exchange of information to build on new and existing relationships and influence outcomes.
Deliver exceptional customer service to all stakeholders.
Minimum Hiring Standards:
Degree in engineering, chemistry or science or at least 3 years experience in Project Management experience in research or manufacturing
Knowledge of project management principles, best practices and processes to include relevant software;
Experience in a role requiring significant project management responsibilities
Ability to influence and inspire a culture of high performance with the professional acumen to hold others accountable for project outcomes
Demonstrable relationship and customer engagement skills including the use of active listening and facilitation of effective conversation to obtain specific outcomes
Strong collaboration skills
Possess a collegial, collaborative work style adept at working effectively in teams to troubleshoot and problem solve
Detail-oriented, but also able to envision the big picture to anticipate and mitigate risks
Efficient organizational skills creating structure, boosting productivity, and prioritizing assignments
Effective verbal, written, and listening skills, including the ability to interact effectively across the organization in situations that may require instruction, persuasion, negotiation, and resolution of conflict
Comfort with public speaking
Motivated, self-starter possessing a keen attention to schedules, deadlines, and details
Ability to be agile and embrace spontaneity while working in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment with engagement with all levels of the organization, its customers, and the university

Preferred Hiring Standards:
Strong relationship management skills with external stakeholders
Experience working in pharmaceutical industry or chemical industries
Experience working in a manufacturing environment, or experience with Lean or Six-Sigma
Ability to communicate complex technical and project subject matter in a thorough, accurate, and concise manner to a wide range of stakeholders, including both technical and non-technical audiences

Hybrid Schedule - Onsite at the VA Bio+Tech Park and remote office
