Plant Mechanic Current Hourly Pay Range: $31.71 - $42.11 Teamsters Level 4 (depending upon qualifications) CLASS SUMMARY This position involves responsible plant maintenance and operations work, ensuring the efficient operation of water treatment facilities, along with all related equipment. Under the general supervision of the Superintendent, the employee independently performs daily duties to support department priorities in alignment with established policies and practices. The Superintendent provides policy guidance, consultation on complex issues, and strategic planning for major projects while addressing interdepartmental concerns. This role is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing a diverse range of mechanical equipment used in water treatment operations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Any one position may not include all the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this class. Allocation of positions to this class will be determined on the amount of time spent in performing the primary duties.) Installs and repairs pumps, motors, compressors and generating equipment; bends and threads pipes; repairs water tanks, settling tanks, gears, motors and chains in tanks; welds flanges and metal tanks. Re-packs valves; aligns motors to pumps, fans; repairs chemical feeders, operates welder, torch, drills, saws, hand tools and other equipment as required. Repairs overhead cranes; dismantles and replaces bearing and packing on pumps; installs pipe supports; rebuilds steps, pump and motor foundations; performs painting of pipes and associated equipment, minor carpenter work, and/or other related work. Troubleshoots and repairs equipment that has failed both electrically and/or mechanically; troubleshoots and repairs electrical panels, motor control boxes, electrical connections, wiring and motors. Knowledge of using and reading various electrical meter and testing devices. Maintains interior and exterior of facilities. Uses independent judgment when resolving work problems and is expected to interpret policies and procedures to others if so directed by the immediate supervisor. Considerable use of independent judgment is expected when maintaining a variety of mechanical/electrical equipment at either the Plant or the Pumping Facility premises. Must follow and comply with City rules and policies. Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, vendors, contractors, residents, City Officials and the general public. Must provide a high level of customer service by being courteous, responsive, respectful and helpful in all interactions with staff, superiors and the general public. Must follow and comply with City rules and policies. Must have regular, reliable and punctual attendance. Performs other duties as assigned. Ability to use senses, primarily touch, hearing and sight to diagnose and troubleshoot problems. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit. Employee may have to occasionally lift or move objects up to 50 - 100 pounds. Must occasionally enter confined spaces and know how to apply related safety procedures. Must sometimes work with energized electrical components and know how to practice related precautions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions some conditions being very adverse. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical or energized electrical equipment or equipment parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The noise level in the work environment may vary from moderate to high. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Graduation from an accredited high school or G.E.D. and a minimum of two (2) years of work experience repairing, replacing and maintaining water plant mechanical and electrical equipment. Knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment as well as its function and repair. Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials and tools of the mechanic's trade; skill in the use of calipers, micrometers and metals used in the manufacture of machines, generators, turbines, and internal combustion engines. Ability to know and be proficient with most electronic metering and testing devices. Ability to identify, isolate and replace defective electrical components, re-wire motors, control circuitry; ability to identify typical symbols and electric diagrams and proficient in understanding and replacing electrical relays, delays, fuses, timers and switches. Knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic controls and components. Ability to work from blueprints, pencil layouts, and written and oral instructions. Ability to do precision work. Ability to diagnose trouble in electrical lines and mechanical operations and maintain work records for plant maintenance. Ability to solve problems related to equipment failure and to effectively make repairs with little supervision at times. Ability to apply logic to problem solving. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, vendors, contractors, residents, City Officials and the general public. LICENSE, CERTIFICATE, OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS (All required licenses and certificates must be current, and the privileges granted under each cannot be suspended or otherwise encumbered.) Must possess a valid State of Ohio driver's license. Possession of, or ability to obtain during the probationary period, a valid State of Ohio Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes. Must possess a valid State of Ohio Class I Water Operator's license. Must be willing to obtain a State of Ohio Class II Water Operator's License, or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of appointment.
