This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. ?The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).
The Sr Mechanical Engineer in Transmission Pipeline & Storage Engineering (TPSE) is responsible for pipeline lowerings and relocations associated with the natural gas transmission pipeline system. Existing pipelines may be identified shallow in depth, needing replaced and lowered, or require relocation of physical alignment to facilitate municipal developments or other third-party requests. The individual is also responsible for executing gas storage mainline, lateral or well line installations, replacements, or retirement projects located on storage pipelines in partnership with Gas Storage Engineering stakeholders.
In addition to project work, the Sr Mechanical Engineer is responsible for collaborative efforts, including formal problem solving, process improvement, standard development or maintenance and other department initiatives with varying stakeholders.
The Sr Mechanical Engineer is ultimately responsible for the development, design, installation and closeout of capital pipeline projects within the Transmission Pipeline Engineering organization. They collaborate with a team of other engineers, project managers, field personnel and design technicians on moderately complex projects to ensure that their projects meet all relevant safety standards and specifications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Design, control, and implement mechanical design packages and serve as the primary point of contact with stakeholders for all mechanical engineering project matters
- Manage the development and installation of natural gas transmission pipeline assets
- Designing, maintaining, implementing, or improving mechanical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic purposes
- Performing a wide range of engineering tasks by supporting design technicians with computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment and facilitating formal design review meetings
- Ensuring that installation and operations conform to standards and company requirements by preparing mechanical systems specifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps
- Investigate and resolve project issues in a timely manner
- Establishing construction, manufacturing, or installation standards or specifications by performing a wide range of detailed calculations
- Writing reports and compiling data regarding existing and potential mechanical engineering projects and studies and provide technical support to other departments and personnel as needed
- Preparing specifications for purchases of mechanical equipment and materials and estimating material, labor, or construction costs for budget preparation
- Collaborate with customers, coworkers, and others to discuss existing or potential mechanical engineering products or projects and monitor project progress and budget, and prepare reports for upper management
- Ensuring compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities

- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with four (4) or more years of relevant experience
- [OR] Bachelor's Degree Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with four (4) or more years of relevant experience

- Valid State of Michigan Driver's License as travel is required for this role
- Pipeline engineering/utility experience
- Understanding of 49 CFR Part 192, the Michigan Gas Safety Standards and ASME B31.8
