The Refrigeration & AC Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operation of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems across campus facilities. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of critical infrastructure that supports academic, residential, and administrative functions at the university.
Responsibilities
1.) Install, maintain, and repair HVAC and refrigeration systems, including chillers, freezers, walk-in coolers, CRAC units, and air conditioning units.
2.) Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance to ensure optimal system performance and longevity.
3.) Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control system issues; implement timely and effective repairs.
4.) Maintain accurate service records, logs, and documentation through CMMS in compliance with university and regulatory standards.
5.) Monitor and adjust building automation systems (BAS) to optimize energy efficiency and occupant comfort.
6.) Assist in the design and planning of HVAC system upgrades and retrofits.
7.) Ensure compliance with all applicable safety codes, environmental regulations, and university policies. Adhere to OSHA, state, and University safety protocols in all maintenance activities.
8.) Respond to emergency repair requests and participate in an on-call rotation for after-hours support.
9.) Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and other trades to support construction and renovation projects.
10.) Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior technicians or apprentices.
11.) Maintain inventory of tools, parts, and supplies; submit requisitions as needed.
12.) Participate in training and professional development to stay current with industry standards and technologies.
13.) This position is considered 'critical staff' and is expected to participate in emergency managements programs.
Minimum Qualifications
A minimum of three years experience in refrigeration repair, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); demonstrated experience in silver-soldering; a working knowledge of refrigerants used in commercial and residential applications; demonstrated customer services skills; and oral and written communications skills required. Technical training in refrigeration and electrical controls preferred. Must be licensed, or receive licensing within six months of hire, by the Environmental Protection Agency to diagnose and repair air conditioning units using the freon recovery system.

Preferences
Depending on the area of assignment, three years of maintenance and repair experience, or equivalency, in one or more of the following areas: pipefitting; heating, air conditioning, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), and steam-operated systems; pneumatic and electronic building control systems; plumbing and refrigeration systems; commercial/industrial laundry equipment; sterilizing equipment; gas/diesel engines and generators; kitchen and cafeteria equipment; mechanical and electrical troubleshooting; and welding. The ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations, effective human relations and communications skills, and demonstrated computer proficiency are essential.
Incumbents who specialize in refrigeration and air conditioning systems must complete a two-year vocational schooling program; possess Environmental Protection Agency certification with a Universal permit to handle refrigerants; and demonstrate a high level of technical expertise. A boiler license may be required for some positions.
