The Electrical Technician - Control Panels is responsible for the assembly, wiring, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical control panels used in oil and gas applications. This includes motor control centers (MCCs), pump control panels, automation enclosures, and safety systems. The technician ensures all work complies with industry standards, site specifications, and applicable codes including NEC and API.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, loop diagrams, and panel layout drawings.
  • Assemble and wire control panels, junction boxes, and enclosures for field equipment such as pumps, compressors, separators, and instrumentation systems.
  • Install and wire components including relays, PLCs, VFDs, HMI screens, terminal blocks, and communication devices (Modbus, Ethernet).
  • Perform functional testing, continuity checks, and troubleshooting on control panels and associated systems.
  • Assist in factory acceptance testing (FAT) and support site commissioning/start-up as needed.
  • Ensure wiring, labeling, and layout are completed per project drawings and customer specifications.
  • Comply with applicable safety and quality standards, including NEC, API, UL, and customer-specific requirements.
  • Communicate with engineers, project managers, and field personnel to resolve issues and provide updates.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certificate or associate degree in Electrical Technology or related field preferred.
  • 3+ years of electrical panel building experience in the oil and gas industry or a heavy industrial setting.
  • Strong understanding of motor controls, instrumentation wiring, intrinsically safe circuits, and hazardous area classifications.
  • Familiarity with PLC-based control systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider).
  • Knowledge of relevant standards and codes (e.g., NEC, API RP 500/505, UL 508A).
  • Ability to use hand tools, multimeters, meggers, and other testing equipment.
  • Able to read and interpret complex wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical documents.
  • Willingness to travel to job sites and work in field conditions when required.

Physical & Environmental Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, kneeling, and working with hands.
  • Must be able to work in a shop environment and occasionally in outdoor/field settings including remote oilfield locations.
