$4,500 paid at the time of hire
$3,000 at successful completion of probation
$7,500 at end of two years of employment
Under direction, to perform a variety of duties involved in the maintenance and repair of Fire Department apparatus, equipment, and facilities. Exercises no supervision. Examples of DutiesExamples of duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performs the full range of skilled mechanic repair work on fire apparatus, equipment, and facilities;
- Inspects, diagnoses, and locates mechanical difficulties on fire automobiles and trucks and other equipment including lawn mowers, weed eaters, smoke ejectors, and jaws of life;
- Plans, schedules, and executes a program of preventive maintenance for Fire Department apparatus, equipment, and facilities;
- Performs annual testing of pumps and ladders;
- Overhauls, repairs, and adjusts engines, transmissions, differentials and clutches;
- Replaces or repairs faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment on fire vehicles and equipment;
- Overhauls or repairs all types of water pumps, valves, and regulators and foam producing equipment;
- Prepares various reports on operations and activities;
- Maintains accurate inventories of tools, apparatus, facilities, and equipment; orders parts as necessary and ensures orders are received timely;
- Estimates time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned;
- Maintains cleanliness of work area and tools; and
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Purposes, uses, and operating characteristics of a variety of vehicles, equipment, tools, and apparatus used in firefighting, rescue, and medical assistance operations;
- Operating and repair characteristics of the full range of apparatus and equipment used in fire service including pumps, valves, hoses, and couplings;
- Practices, methods, equipment, tools, and materials used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of fire service apparatus and equipment;
- Principles and procedures of preventive maintenance related to fire service apparatus and equipment;
- Operating and repair characteristics of hydraulic systems, high pressure air systems, and high pressure water systems;
- Operation and care of internal combustion engines and hydraulic equipment;
- Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work;
- Principles and procedures of record keeping;
- Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations including administrative and departmental policies and procedures;
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the area of mechanical repair and maintenance work; and
- Safe driving principles and practices.
- Operate a variety of tools and equipment used in mechanical repair work; and
- Operate a motor vehicle safely.
- Perform responsible mechanical repair work with accuracy, speed, and minimal supervision.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot motor and mechanical problems;
- Read and interpret hydraulic and electrical schematics and fabrication blueprints;
- Interpret and apply Federal, State, local, administrative, and departmental laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures;
- Interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds;
- Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records;
- Prepare clear and concise reports;
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions;
- Exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs;
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Three years of experience in automotive, power, and fire equipment repair.
- Equivalent to a high school diploma.
- Possession, and maintenance, of a valid Class A driver's license.
- Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification is desirable and must be obtained within two years of appointment.
- Possession of an appropriate A.S.E. certificate is desirable.
- Possess and maintain an Airbrake Certificate is desirable.
- Possess and maintain an Air Conditioning Certificate is desirable.
- California Fire Mechanics Academy (CFMA) Level I certification is desirable.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, and lift 50 lbs.;
- Exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards;
- Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
