Job Summary
Under general supervision, installs, removes, services and make repairs to steam supply lines, condensate return lines, trap and steam operated equipment throughout the hospital facilities and its satellites.Qualifications
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1) Installs, maintains, repairs and services steam piping, steam pressure reducing valves, steam traps, hospital main pressure reducing steam trains, the condensate return system.
2) Monitors the steam return system for silica and correct conductivity to assume contract compliance with the hospital steam supplier.
3) Maintain and correct steam pressure as required on steam systems throughout the hospital.
4) Installs, repairs, and maintains both high- and low-pressure steam supply and condensate systems throughout the campus.
5) Regularly directs the work of assistants or apprentices.
6) Is subject to call anytime for emergencies.
7) Responds to problems as required of all trades when working off-shift.
8) Assist plumbers as needed.
9) Electronically Complete daily record of jobs completed for use in preparation of chargebacks for services rendered and completion.
10) May be required to assist other trades if so needed.
11) Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
12) Responsible for snow removal as needed.
13) Works with Vendors, Engineers and Contractors as directed pertaining to all facets of MGH steam systems
1) Must be able to read, write, and perform calculations at a level generally acquired through a high school education.
2) Completion of a three-year apprentice program and one-to-two-year formal training in steam fitting.
3) Holder of a valid Massachusetts pipefitters license with five years experience as a steamfitter with a strong industrial background or suitable equivalent. Holder of a valid Massachusetts Journeyman plumber license with five years experience.
4) Must have strong computer skills.
Skills and Abilities
1) Requires strong knowledge of steam loads, condensate loads, expansion and contraction of pipes at different temperatures. Knowledge of pumps and related equipment.
2) Requires ability to communicate via drawings and sketches (i.e. drafting) in sufficient detail to efficiently perform the work shown.
3) Requires strong knowledge in assembly and installation of different piping materials.
4) Must be able to soft solder, silver soldier, cut and thread pipe as needed for the completion of assigned tasks.
5) Physical ability to carry tools, walk or stand almost constantly. Lift equipment and exert pressure on pipe wrenches.
6) Occasionally (less than 15% of the time) must exert effort to lift over seventy pounds.
Working Conditions
1) Compliance with the Hospital and department rules on uniforms in addition to the Buildings & Grounds policy and procedure manual.
2) Subject to hazards from power tools, heat and eye strain from torches. However, observance of safety procedures minimizes risks.
3) The use of safety equipment such as: respirators, safety glasses, safety shoes, etc. on specific job assignments.
4) Comply with Hospitals universal precaution rules.
5) Understand and practice patient confidentiality (HIPPA)
6) Understand and practice infection control through proper dust containment. Understand the use of the environmental containment booths.
7) Some overtime is required.
8) Is subject to call any time for emergencies due to increment weather, special project or plant failure.
9) Provide own hand tools.
