Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Assists in planning and overseeing the work of heavy equipment mechanics or automotive mechanices, and trainees.
  • Examines and locates mechanical defects in a wide variety of automotive, road construction and maintenance equipment, which may include diesel and/or gasoline powered automobiles, trucks, tractors, motor graders and loaders.
  • Makes major and minor mechanical repairs including engine tune-ups, brake relining, body and fender repairs, electrical system repairs, radio installation, and air-conditioning repair.
  • Disassembles, repairs, grinds, or replaces worn parts.
  • Fits new parts and adjusts engines, oil, water, and fuel pumps, carburetors and fuel injectors, governors, starting motors, clutches, transmissions, differentials, brakes, and steering gear.
  • May repair Caterpillar tractors, checking and replacing rollers, pins, and bushings.
  • Times and adjusts motors, replaces electrical wiring, estimates repair costs, and inventories parts.
  • May overhaul hydraulic lifts and steering assemblies in motor graders and tractors.
  • Maintains records of time and materials used on each job and completes work orders.
  • Repairs and paints automotive and equipment bodies.
  • May do gas and electrical welding.
  • May do repair work in the field and operate a variety of vehicles.
Experience:
One (1) year of skilled automotive or heavy equipment repair work comparable to Heavy Equipment Mechanic II or a Senior Automotive Technician in Merced County.

Licenses:
Possess and maintain a valid California Class A Driver's license if assigned to the Heavy Equipment Shop, or a California Class C Drivers license if assigned to Fleet Shop.

Possession of a valid State of California Class A Brake Certificate, a Class A Lamp Certificate, and Refrigeration/Recycling Air Conditioning Certificate if assigned to Heavy Equipment Shop; or possession of at least (4) ASE certificates at the time of appointment to Fleet Shop.

IDENTIFIED SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION WILL BE SUBJECT TO PRE-EMPLOYMENT, POST-ACCIDENT, REASONABLE SUSPICION, RANDOM AND RETURN-TO-DUTY DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING PURSUANT TO THE PROVISIONS OF THE COUNTY OF MERCED DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING POLICY
  • Operate a personal computer and other modern office equipment.

  • Communicate effectively with others in person and over the telephone.

  • Analyze data, interpret directions, procedures and regulations, and develop appropriate responses.

  • Perform job duties under stressful conditions.

  • Respond appropriately to situations.

  • Maintain confidential information in accordance with legal standards and/or County regulations.

  • Lift and move with help objects weighing over 100 pounds.

  • Wear a respirator, safety glasses or other protective clothing and equipment, as needed.

  • May conduct activities on uneven surfaces under various environmental conditions.

  • May frequently operate large, heavy equipment on uneven and/or rough terrain.

  • Frequently drive vehicles and maintain equipment.

  • Frequent use of depth perception, peripheral vision and color perception.

  • Sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.

  • Frequently lift, carry, reach, push, pull, twist and manipulate large and small objects.

  • Occasionally kneel, bend, twist, squat, climb, balance and crawl.

  • Frequent repetitive hand and arm motion.

  • Occasional risk of exposure to hazardous materials.

  • Normal dexterity, frequent holding, grasping, repetitive motion.

  • Frequent exposure to noise.

  • Constant use of hand/eye coordination.

  • Regular attendance is an essential function.
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and techniques of supervision and training.

  • Principles and techniques of the smog certification process when assigned to the Fleet Shop.

  • Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the testing, adjustment, repair, and overhaul of automotive and/or road construction equipment.

  • Theory and operation of gasoline and diesel engines.

  • Principles and methods of gas and electrical welding and painting techniques.

  • Safe work practices and Federal and State safety regulations.

  • Principles and methods used in a program of preventive maintenance for automotive and/or road construction equipment.

  • Methods used in electric-arc and acetylene welding when assigned to Road Shop.

  • Hydraulic valves and controls, hydraulic and air brake systems, and electronic ignition systems when assigned to Road Shop.
Ability to:
  • Train, oversee and evaluate the work of subordinate employees.

  • Inspect and accurately diagnose mechanical defects.

  • Skillfully use a variety of hand and power tools in the repair of automotive equipment.

  • Perform highly skilled testing, adjustment, repair, and overhaul work on gasoline and/or diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment.

  • Estimate time and materials for repair jobs.

  • Keep accurate records of time and materials used.

  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

  • Design and fabricate tools and equipment.
