Water Plant Operator w/ Relief Duties

Responsible levels of skilled work in the maintenance of the Water Treatment plant; this position also performs the duties of the Water Plant Operator on an assigned shift.

Work involves the performance of skilled maintenance work relating to the mechanical and pumping equipment on a routine or as needed basis. Work requires the application of varied trade, mechanic, and welding skills performed under general supervision.

Examples of Duties

Other duties may be assigned. (This list may not include all of the tasks and/or knowledge which may be expected of the employee, nor does it cover all of the specific duties which may be required).

  • Perform all duties of the Water Plant Operator as regularly scheduled or as assigned to cover vacations, sick leave, or other operator absences.

  • Repair and maintain chemical feeding and mixing equipment; calibrate feed rate settings on chemical feed equipment; assist in or perform the replacement of bearings, belts, and pump diaphragms; clean feed ejectors and lines; weld; grind surface; paint equipment.

  • Check and lubricate switching gears and motors; install motor brushes; replace motor bearings and packings; change engine and motor oil.

  • Assist in changing or installation of pumps and motors.

  • Install doors and water lines; repair windows; perform building painting, perform general maintenance of water filters and valves; install packing; clean water valves.

  • Operate light automotive equipment on incidental assignment, related to mechanic work; install new mechanical equipment by assignment.

Typical Qualifications

Education/Experience:

Required: Graduation from high school or vocational/technical school supplemented by completion of water plant operator courses; experience in general water maintenance work including some experience in water treatment plant operations; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that will provide the following knowledge, abilities, and skills.

General Skill Levels:

Knowledge of:

  • Water treatment plant operations and processes involving pumping, filtering and treatment.

  • Practices, methods, tools, and equipment used in specialized maintenance.

  • Occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in the maintenance and operation of a water treatment plant.

  • Welding including arc, acetylene, torch, and brazing work.

Ability to:

  • Perform basic laboratory tests at a level which can quickly be learned on the job.

  • Read and work from diagrams and blueprints.

  • Read meters and gauges correctly and to act quickly and independently in operational emergencies.

  • Follow detailed and general oral and written instructions.

  • Prepare and maintain limited operational records.

Certificate or Licenses:

Required:

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Illinois Drivers License.

  • Required to obtain an Illinois EPA Water Supply Class C Operators license within 18 months of hire. Employees must pass the Class C exam within their probationary period but will be allowed 18 months to earn hours towards the license requirement.

Preferred:

  • Illinois EPA Water Supply Class A Operators License.

  • Certification as a Laboratory Analyst for the Colilert technique in the Citys bacteriological laboratory by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Note: Employees in this class will be required to meet any future State or Federal requirements relating to the purification and distribution of potable water.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • Majority of work is performed in an outdoor setting in all conditions including hot, cold, wet and dry weather. Work requires traveling to various sites and the ability to traverse a variety of natural and altered ground surfaces which may be uneven, wet or slippery or sloped.
