About this Job

This Carpenter Master position performs complex and detailed carpentry work related to buildings, structures, furniture, cabinets and other wooden items that require a high degree of precision. It is located in the Maintenance Department of Eastern Louisiana Mental Hospital System in Jackson, LA (East Feliciana Parish), which is the largest 24-hour, multi-site, state psychiatric complex, comprised of residential, outpatient and inpatient services.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience:

Three years of experience or training in the carpentry trade.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

50% - Perform independent decisions on layouts. Build, remodel, and renovate existing residences and buildings. Hang doors and install windows. Operate hand and power tools. Build and install prefabricated shelves and cabinets, re-roof residences, make necessary repairs on patient care buildings such as replace ceiling tiles, repair doors, build book shelves, replace worn out wood floors, and vinyl floor tile, etc.

40% - Makes necessary changes to pre-existing structures to Fire Marshal's specifications and Life Safety Codes. Reconstruct porches, hand-rails, floors, ceilings and any other structural damage. Repair and reconstruct broken furniture. Assemble weight scales, assemble and/or make repairs to wheel chairs, medicine carts. 5

% - Order all needed supplies, materials and equipment for the Carpenter shop. Ensures preventive maintenance is done periodically on shop equipment.

5% - Participate in education trainings that are mandatory for accreditation and licensure of the facility.

Must possess and maintain a valid, unencumbered driver's license.

Perform all other duties assigned by supervisor/designee to maintain continuity and quality, accreditation and licensure requirements. Perform all other duties assigned by supervisor, but not listed, for the smooth operation of the unit/building and/or the facility.

Adheres to all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of LDH, OBH, Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System, Civil Service and the ELMHS Maintenance Department.

This position may be filled as either a Probational or Job Appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency wide permanent status employees); or by Detail to Special Duty. Current permanent status, classified employees may be required to accept a Probational appointed if selected. If filled as a Job Appointment, there is a possibility that this position may be converted to a Probational Appointment should funding become available.
