POSITION SUMMARY:

The Heavy Equipment Operator, under the direction of the Lead Heavy Equipment Operator, is responsible for operating backhoes, dozers, and dump trucks, excavators, loaders and other heavy equipment used in various stages of construction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Excavates, moves and grades earth.
  • Performs preventative and light maintenance on equipment.
  • Reports safety issues to management

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Moving and hauling heavy equipment and trailers on public roadways as needed.
  • Follows company safety rules and regulations.
  • All other job-related duties as assigned.

CONTACTS:

Immediate peers and immediate supervisor/manager, peers in other departments, executives, Board of Directors, customers and outside vendors/service providers, general public and Tribal members.

PHYSCIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position lifts objects over 100 pounds with team or dual lifting and frequent lifting/carrying of more than 50 pounds. Physical factors include constant sitting, climbing, use of hearing, smelling, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, color vision, field of vision and driving of loaders, dozers, skid steers, excavators, backhoes and rollers; frequent standing, walking, carrying, lifting, pushing and pulling, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching and manual handling and bending. Working conditions include constant exposure to weather, extreme heat and cold, wet/humid, noise, vibration and air quality. Potential hazards include constant moving mechanical parts and exposure to equipment; and occasional exposure to electric shock, high exposed places, chemicals, insecticides/pesticides and infectious exposure. Protective equipment and clothing needed to perform the job includes steel toe boots, safety glasses and hard hats. Tvek suits, disposable boots, dust masks, and full air respirators must be used when working on projects that may present a hazard of infectious exposure.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 2 years of heavy equipment operation experience required.

Certifications/License: Must have a CDL Class A license or have the ability to obtain CDL Class A license within 90 days of hire. Must have valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing. Will be required to submit and pass a pre-employment drug test as required by State and Federal guidelines for CDL Class A license. Will be required to be subjected to random drug testing as required by State and Federal guidelines for CDL Class A license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be able to carry out job as assigned in efficient time frame. Must have working knowledge of safety requirements for operating heavy equipment. Must have working knowledge of underground utilities, grades, and capable of finish grade. Must be able and proficient at operating backhoes, dozers, dump trucks, excavators and loaders. Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions. Must be available to respond to maintenance calls 24 hours a day 7 days a week, during the snow plow season of November 15 to April 1, including holidays and weekends. Must be able to work extended hours when needed. Native American preferred.
