The Heavy Equipment Mechanic Inspector (HEMI) is responsible for the diagnosing, repair and determining the extent of repairs required and what parts and the time required to repair equipment. Inspecting work in progress; inspecting and testing the final product and approving the repairs. HEMI dismantle and reassemble equipment, using hoists and hand tools, examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges, replace defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and test overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency. The HEMI prepares reports information papers and other documents. HEMI should be experience in military/civilian light, medium and heavy wheeled/tracked and equipment power generation and ground support equipment. Responsibilities Major Responsibilities: HEM Inspector will direct the work of other mechanics and provide support to maintenance team to ensure satisfactory levels of customer service are maintained for internal and external customers. Inspects, tests, and operates wheeled equipment (commercial and military) to determine equipment serviceability and proper operation. Uses Automated Logistics Information System to maintain equipment records, and document maintenance actions, maintains wheeled, construction and grounding systems. Removes, disassembles repairs, cleans, treats for corrosion, assembles, and reinstall components and accessories. Disposes of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with all state, local, and federal environmental standards and regulations. Operates, cleans, inspects and services wheeled equipment for maintenance purposes. Practices good housekeeping, property, accountability control, Foreign Object Damage prevention and safety at all times. Additional responsibilities included working with a variety of repair and test equipment including welders, torches, pressure testers and electrical testers to name a few. Performs other duties as assigned to meet organizational/operational objectives. Job duties and responsibilities may change due to contractual requirements. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic Inspector receives guidance and direction as necessary from the Supervisor with regards to policies, directives and professional development. Material & Equipment Directly Used: Extensive use of basic shop equipment, diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, and lifting devices. Steel toe shoes are required. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in certain areas while work is being conducted. Such PPE includes, but is not limited to: face mask (covering nose and mouth), head, foot, hand, vision and hearing protective devices. Personal computer, printer, calculator, fax machine, copy machine and other general office equipment. Working Environment: Work is generally conducted in a shop environment. However, duties may involve the conduct of work in the outdoors area with a potential exposure to extreme climatic condition. The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions. One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation. A normal work week is 40 hours (5 days a week). Must be willing to work additional hours when mission requires. Physical Activities: Work requires sitting, standing, walking, climbing, bending and routine lifting of equipment and boxes in an office environment. Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. One-year related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required. Must possess a Valid State Driver's License Must have and maintain a valid state Class A CDL. Must have the ability to acquire and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC) Applicant must furnish their own serviceable, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliant, tools, that are appropriate for their required duties. Experience : Three (3) to six (6) years of experience in wheeled equipment maintenance or equivalent. Skills: Must be proficient in servicing, troubleshooting and repairing military and civilian wheeled/track power generation and ground support equipment.
