Compensation
The range for this position is $29.00 - $40.00 (hourly).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform journey-level carpentry work, including constructing, repairing, and installing walls, floors, ceilings, doors, windows, cabinetry, fixtures, and exterior structures.
- Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions.
- Identify and complete facility repairs to support safety, access, and aesthetics.
- Assist in fabricating custom elements for exhibits, signage, and temporary structures.
- Ensure all work follows applicable codes, safety standards, and Zoo guidelines.
- Estimate labor and material needs for projects and maintain tools and supply inventory.
- Use the CMMS system to track assignments, time, and completed work.
- Coordinate with the Multi-Trades Manager on project timelines and budgets.
- Collaborate with other trades and contractors to complete cross-functional projects.
- Set up and take down infrastructure for Zoo events and respond to urgent maintenance needs.
- Communicate effectively with Facilities leadership and internal partners.
- Provide professional, responsive service to staff, guests, and visitors.
- Maintain a clean, safe workspace and uphold DZCA's health, safety, and sustainability standards.
- Operate hand and power tools (e.g., saws, drills, routers) and equipment (e.g., backhoes, skid steers, forklifts) with training.
- Use basic computer programs (e.g., MS Word, Excel, Outlook) as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Technical / Professional Requirements & Qualifications
- Minimum of 7 years of general, non-licensed carpentry and maintenance experience.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred experience in locksmithing, commercial construction/remodeling, stage design, or custom fabrication.
- Ability to read and follow manuals, blueprints, and both written and verbal instructions.
- Experience with computer-based work order systems is a plus.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- High mechanical aptitude and effective problem-solving abilities.
Position Conditions
- Ability to pass a physical examination, background check, and pre-employment drug and alcohol screen.
- Clear driving record.
- Ability to lift to 50 lbs.
Schedule & Work Environment
- Tuesday - Saturday, with some rotating on-call shifts.
- On-campus work at DZCA.
