General Statement of the Job & Essential Functions
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under general supervision, operates a variety of motorized equipment for the waste management. Reports to an Equipment Operator Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Operates equipment such as automated and/or semi-automated solid waste collection vehicle; Prentis loaders, roll off trucks and refuse trucks on an assigned route; picks up solid waste at each designated stop; loads waste into collection vehicle; replaces garbage cans to appropriate location; when truck reaches capacity, transports waste to dump site; unloads collected trash; and then returns to route until route is complete; collects and removes solid waste and debris from assigned areas throughout the city.
Performs daily inspection of solid waste vehicles to ensure proper working condition; inspects tires, lights, blades, fuel, fluids, windshield wipers; assists in cleaning solid waste collection vehicles; repairs on solid waste vehicles to include replacing and replenishing oil, water and lubricants; cleaning blades; reports any tree limbs, utility lines or other possible obstructions.
Ensures the safety of city equipment, private property, and others by following proper safety procedures, watching for pedestrians, private property, overhead utility lines and other utilities or obstructions.
Performs routine checks and preventive maintenance on equipment; identifies and reports equipment malfunctions; cleans equipment as needed.
Performs other related work as required. Individual assignments will be determined by supervisor based on current workload and department needs.

Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interacts with all departments, co-workers and the public.

Dependability: Assumes responsibility for doing assigned work and for meeting deadlines. Completes assigned work on or before deadlines in accordance with directives, policies, standards and prescribed procedures. Accepts accountability for meeting assigned responsibilities in the technical, human and conceptual areas.
Attendance: Attends work regularly and ads to policies and procedures regarding absences and tardiness. Provides adequate notice to higher management with respect to vacation time and time-off requests.

Estimates expected time of completion of elements of work and establishes a personal schedule accordingly. Attends meetings, planning sessions and discussions of time. Implements work activity in accordance with priorities and estimated schedules. Maintains a calendar for meetings and deadlines.
Safety and Housekeeping: Ads to all safety and housekeeping standards established by the city and various regulatory agencies. Sees that the standards are not violated. Maintains a clean and orderly workplace.
Education, Experience & Special Requirements
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Requires completion of 10th grade in high school and 3 to 5 years of operating heavy equipment; experience in automatic or semi-automatic collection vehicle is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. High school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training is preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
An acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check and sex offender registry check.
Requires satisfactory results from a pre-employment medical evaluation and pre-employment substance abuse testing and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.
A valid commercial driver's license or a commercial driver's instruction permit with the ability to obtain a commercial driver's license within 90 days of hire with an acceptable driving record.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a solid waste collection vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are for Heavy Work.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Interpersonal Communications: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments and directions from superiors.
