Building Mechanical Design Engineer- Labs

This role is hybrid out of Northbrook, IL or Raleigh, NC

UL Solutions has a global network of complex testing laboratories, and we are growing and evolving to address new emerging technologies in the marketplace. As a Mechanical Engineer specializing in industrial construction, your role will focus on designing, implementing, and maintaining mechanical systems within advanced, complex testing laboratories, and other facilities. Your expertise will contribute to the efficient design of mechanical systems, HVAC systems, and safety protocols in UL Solutions global portfolio of testing laboratories. Reporting to the Architect and Design Lead in the Construction Team, the Mechanical Engineer will partner with Facility Planners, Customer Operating Units, Electrical Engineers and CAD planners to design labs from ideation to concept designs, and partner with external vendors globally to develop designs and construct facilities.

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in industrial building mechanical engineering.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Revit, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar).
  • Knowledge of industrial automation and control systems.
  • Familiarity with energy-efficient designs.

The estimated salary range for this position is $101,200 to $120,000 and is based on multiple factors, including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, as well as other factors. This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 10% of the base salary. This position also provides health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental and financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country. We also provide full-time employees with paid time off including vacation (15 days), holiday including floating holidays (12 days) and sick time off (72 hours).

System Design and Optimization:

  • Collaborate with architects and project managers to design mechanical systems for lab buildings facilities.
  • Develop efficient layouts for HVAC, plumbing, and ventilation systems that support the testing requirements and equipment installed in labs
  • Optimize energy usage and sustainability through innovative designs.
  • Be part of design and construction team to develop conceptual plans and budgets, value engineering and bring concepts to reality
  • Partner with external engineering firms globally to take concept design through construction documents and execution, ensuring design standards are met

Equipment Selection and Installation:

  • Collaborate on selecting equipment for industrial processes.
  • Oversee installation, testing, and commissioning of mechanical systems.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

  • Troubleshoot issues related to pumps, motors, conveyors, and other equipment.
  • Recommend preventive maintenance plans and schedules.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Design safety features, emergency shutdown systems, and fire protection mechanisms.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and other relevant regulations.
  • Conduct risk assessments for mechanical installations.

Collaboration and Documentation:

  • Work closely with electrical engineers, civil engineers, and other professionals.
  • Create detailed technical documentation, including CAD drawings and specifications.
