Perform difficult skilled work in repair and maintenance of automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, and other gasoline and diesel equipment, including diagnosis, repair and preventive maintenance activities.
Performs complex skilled mechanic work in repairing and overhauling chassis units including automobile engines (regular and electronic ignition systems), brakes systems (drum, disc, and air systems) alternator charging systems, differentials, air conditioning and electrical systems.
Performs routine scheduled preventive maintenance on vehicles, including tune-ups, changing oil and filters, changing air filters, mount, balancing, and rotating tires. Perform routine transmission fluid checks and services.

Adjusts and relines brakes and maintains hydraulic systems and electrical systems.
Operates test equipment in detecting mechanical defects in equipment. Make decisions determining repair or replacement of defective units or related parts.
Customize vehicles to include removing, installing, and or repairing specialty equipment.
Repair various specialty equipment, air compressors, pneumatic accessories, pumps, and related machinery and small equipment.
Travel to job sites to diagnose and/or repair equipment; tows equipment to shop as needed.
Conduct inspections, road test vehicles, complete and sign work orders, clean work area.
Employee is subject to recall and/or mandatory overtime for emergency situations.
Performs other related duties as required.
This position requires to be part of an "On Call" rotation to respond to emergency calls after hours (Public Works only).
Education and Experience:
High School or vocational school diploma or G.E.D. supplemented with training in auto mechanics.
Three years mechanical experience.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the minimum level of qualifications stated above.
Licenses and Certifications:
ASE Certification Preferred.
Valid Class B CDL Driver's License (or ability to get within 6 months) and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (Public Works only).
Due to the safety-sensitive nature of this position, incumbents will be subject to random drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of methods, practices and procedures for repairing, overhauling and maintaining automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment.
