JOB SUMMARY
Uses hand-welding or flame-cutting to weld metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams. Performs duties with a high regard for safety and accuracy.
JOB DUTIES/TASKS/RESPONSIBILITIES
Operate safety equipment and use safe and efficient work habits.
Operates manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding, and cutting torch.
Monitors the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material to ensure conformance with specifications.
Positions, aligns, and secures parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straight edges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.
Analyzes shop drawings, blueprints, specifications, sketches, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.
Clamps, holds, tack-welds, grinds or bolts component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
Grinds off excess weld, slag, or spatter, using hand scrapers or power chippers, portable grinders, or arc-cutting equipment to smooth out rough edges and maintain safety.
Marks or tags material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required ensuring proper shipment to customers.
Dismantles metal assemblies or cuts scrap metal using thermal-cutting equipment such as flame-cutting torches or plasma-arc equipment.
Performs daily activities and prioritizes tasks based on written and oral directions from Weld Lead and Manager.
Must complete process/facility training as assigned.
There is no supervision of other workers at this level.
Responsible for the quality of his/her own work and satisfying customer (internal and external) specifications
Must complete process/facility training as assigned
Must be able to work independently and resolve practical problems
Provides training to Weld Technician 1 and 2 staff as needed and reviews the work of others as needed
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education
High School diploma or GED
Certifications AWS D1.3 welding certification Fork lift certification
Required Experience
A minimum of 5 years of experience as a Weld Technician
Preferred Experience None preferred

Intermediate knowledge of welding tools
Advanced mechanical knowledge
Basic quality control analysis

General knowledge of local, state and federal health and safety regulations [e.g., Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)]
Ability to understand and apply health and safety regulations and requirements
Demonstrated ability to perform all types of welding
Demonstrated ability to read and understand blueprints and other schematics
Qualified to work with specialty metals
Ability to read complex drawings and blueprints
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Ability to perform physically demanding work
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and wear a respirator
Ability to carry, push, pull up to 50 pounds
Ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, and kneel
Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and environments wherein there is exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, chemicals and mechanical and electrical hazards
Ability to work in extreme temperatures
Ability to effectively communicate; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location
Ability to work in or around moving vehicles, rotating equipment, and ladders/scaffolds
Basic math and computer skills; mechanical ability
Ability to wear protective equipment such as: goggles, ear plugs, gloves, and steel toe boots
Normal vision (with or without correction)
Ability to perceive depth and adjust focus; basic hand/eye coordination
Ability to see close and distance, basic colors/shades, and peripheral vision
Forklift certified
