Job Summary
Serves as a functional supervisor implementing, under the supervision of the Urban Forestry Manager, proper forestry and horticulture practices within the City of Florence. Supervises others assigned to work details performing work in areas such as planting, pruning, removal, fertilization, and irrigation, of trees, shrubs, and flowers. The incumbent shall also supervise planting site preparation and weed and pest control, and maintain good record-keeping practices about the same.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities and Supervision Required
- Supervises, instructs and participates in site preparation and planting of trees, shrubs, and ornamentals.
- Supervises, instructs, and participates in tree and shrub pruning, removal, fertilization, and irrigation.
- Supervises, instructs, and participates in weed and pest control around trees and shrubs, and flower beds.
- Supervises, instructs and participates in the operation and maintenance of equipment.
- Maintains records of equipment inventory, work activities, and tree inventories.
- Assists the Department Head In keeping items within the yearly budget.
- Maintains Alabama commercial pesticide applicators permit.
- Maintains a record of all equipment and vehicle maintenance.
- Maintains training and operational records for the herbicide program.
- Maintains records and specifications of materials and supplies ordered.
- Maintains good attendance and a safe work environment.
- Assists in the operation and development of departmental programs.
- Assists in the operational support functions.
- Assists in supervising construction projects.
- Assists the Mayor, Beautification Board, Tree Commission, and Department Heads during the absence of the Urban Forestry Manager.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Experience, Training, & License
- Valid Class B Commercial driver's license or must obtain one within 1 year of hire date.
- Alabama commercial pesticide applicator's permit or must obtain one within one year of their hire date.
- Have 18 months to three years of experience in urban forestry practices.
- Associate's degree in technical areas or equivalent experience.
- Strong knowledge of the operation of chainsaws and proper tree pruning techniques is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of common plant and tree species and the ability to identify them in the field is preferred.
- Strong leadership skills and knowledge of scheduling are preferred.
Required Knowledge Skills Abilities
- Ability to work effectively with other personnel and instruct workers in sound, safe methods of specialized work.
- Ability to work with the public and handle public comments and complaints with tact.
- Ability to work in variable weather conditions
- Must possess skills in propagating and growing plants and maintaining existing plants in a healthy condition.
- Ability to follow policies outlined in the employee manual and document and report any discrepancies.
- Ability to supervise and communicate with other personnel professionally.
Supervision:
Work is assigned by the Urban Forestry Manager with minimum supervision and direction. The employee uses their judgment and skills to perform the job in a proper and timely manner.
Physical Demands:
Prolonged standing, walking, bending, stretching, transporting heavy materials and loads up to fifty pounds, digging, shoveling, pushing, pulling, and twisting. Involves frequent outdoor exposure to heat and cold.
Equipment/Tools Used:
Pick-up trucks, dump trucks, bucket trucks, backhoes/loaders, tractors, chainsaws, stump grinders, weed eaters, mowers, hedge trimmers, blowers, irrigation equipment, pruning saws, ladders, shovels, mattocks, telephones, computers.
