Purpose of Position:
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and development of ruggedized mechanical systems for advanced mining technologies. This role involves full-cycle product developmentfrom concept and CAD modeling to testing and field deploymentsupporting Hexagon's mission to revolutionize mining operations through innovation and integration.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
Lead mechanical design of enclosures, mounts, and integrated systems for mining vehicles and infrastructure
Develop CAD models and drawings using SolidWorks, Creo, or similar tools; manage assets via PDM systems
Enhance design for manufacturability through collaboration with Manufacturing personnel
Create and execute test plans for environmental, vibration, and ingress protection (IP67+) validation
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including electrical, RF, and software engineers
Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and HAZOPs
Interface with suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure quality and compliance
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
Support field testing and deployment of systems in operational mining environments
Knowledge and Experience - Required:
10+ years of mechanical design experience, preferably in ruggedized or industrial systems
Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Creo) and familiarity with PDM systems
Strong understanding of materials, tolerancing, and environmental sealing
Experience with mechanical testing and validation (thermal, vibration, EMI, etc.)
Expertise in design practices tailored to injection molding, die casting, and machining techniques
Excellent communication and documentation skills
Knowledge and Experience - Desired:
Experience in mining, heavy equipment, or autonomous vehicle systems
Familiarity with RF systems, electronics packaging, and EMI shielding
Hands-on experience with prototyping, machining, and test equipment
Experience with IP-rated designs and field deployment in harsh environments
Knowledge of industry standards and regulatory compliance
Travel:
Approximately 2 weeks of travel per year; possible events requiring travel include a new vendor audit, oversight of a field trial of a new design.
