Description
DEFINITION:
Under general direction, performs the full array of duties assigned to the classification of Equipment Operator including operation of a variety of light and heavy equipment, and inspection and performance of routine maintenance and repairs on equipment; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; occasionally assists in training other personnel in the operation and maintenance of light and heavy duty equipment; performs related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Equipment Operator is the journey level class responsible for operation and maintenance of light, medium and heavy equipment such as a backhoe, ditch digger, street sweeper, front-end and skip loader, cinder spreader, water and dump truck, roller, bulldozer and grader.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
General supervision is received from the Maintenance Crew Supervisor and/or designee. May occasionally exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level public works personnel, volunteers or court assigned workers.
Examples of Duties
Performs the full array of duties assigned to the classification of Equipment Operator including the operation of light, medium and heavy duty equipment in connection with various public works projects, inspecting and performing routine maintenance and repair on assigned equipment, and training other personnel in the operation and maintenance of said equipment.
Demonstrates a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.
Serves as crew leader on assigned projects.
Prepares and submits records of work accomplished.
Participates in the City's After Hours On-Call and Surveillance Program as required.
Responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information as is appropriate and resolves complaints.
Perform other related and peripheral duties as required and necessary for the successful performance of this job.
Typical Qualifications
Education and/or Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for a Equipment Operator. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment, and a High School diploma or GED.
License/Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid class C California driver's license.
Must obtain a valid Class A California driver's license within six (6) months of appointment.
