NATURE OF JOB:

This is highly skilled work in the operation of the most complex and heavy motor-driven earth-moving equipment. This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of very heavy construction equipment. Work in this position requires a high degree of skill in working to engineering grades, in operating very heavy equipment, and in working efficiently so as not to impede the progress of related operations. Supervision consists primarily in job performance checks made at work site.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Operates a power grader on construction and maintenance work; blades sub-grades; blades finish grade to engineering specifications.

Operates draglines in routine and complex power shovel work; cleans ditches; fills trucks; may do pile driving.

Operates mobile hydraulically-operated excavation equipment such as Gradall, Hopto, or equivalent.

Operates a lowboy; loads bulldozers, graders, payloaders, mowing machines and related construction and automotive equipment; transports equipment to work site; operates any and all equipment on a relief basis when regular operators are absent.

May occasionally operate a simple flatbed or dump truck, or a variety of minor powered machinery and equipment; may participate generally in the laboring work of the crew as workload demands.

Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use; performs routine service and maintenance.

Regular reliable full time attendance as scheduled.

The employer may add to or change duties at any time and as determined by the County and its leaders to best ensure that the public is served through the work of the Department.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or the equivalent.

Considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment.

Special Licenses required or required to obtain in a certain amount of time.

Ability to use special types of equipment.

Must be able to comprehend, speak and read the English language.

Must have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.

A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS:

Possession of a valid Florida Commercial's Class A Driver's license with driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program or ability to obtain one within time limits established by the State of Florida.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, adaptabilities, limitations and safety precautions of the particular equipment to which assignment is made.

Skill in the operation of complex construction equipment.

Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with public.

Outstanding project management and organizational skills.

Ability to make emergency repairs and to assist in making general repairs of motor driven and other construction equipment.

Ability to operate heavy equipment over rough terrain and to perform manual labor occasionally under adverse weather conditions

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to obtain necessary information and to complete accurate accident and other reports.

Ability to prepare simple reports.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Work is primarily performed outdoors and requires moderate to extreme exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, varying and adverse weather; work in water, brush and ditches, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors or dust).

This position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g. exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment) This position often requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations or clearances.

Bending/stooping, sitting, standing, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing/pulling, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement of firm grasping and fine manipulation, repetitive motions, depth perception, balancing, squatting, working at heights. This position requires frequent lifting and carrying of 10-25lbs, and up to 100lbs on occasion.

WORK LOCATION:

Not Eligible for Remote Work - This position is assigned to a county worksite. Due to the non-portable nature of the essential functions of this position, this position is not eligible for telework.
