Summary
The Machine Operator is responsible for operating cutting and polishing equipment in a granite and stone countertop fabrication shop. This role ensures all equipment is maintained in accordance with safety and service protocols, and that all stone is cut and finished to precise specifications.
Essential Functions
Level I
Operate machinery to cut, polish, and edge granite, quartz, and other natural/engineered stone slabs
Inspect raw slabs for defects and confirm material quality before fabrication
Ensure finished pieces meet job specifications and quality standards
Maintain a clean and organized work area
Follow all company safety protocols and procedures
Perform daily maintenance checks on assigned machinery
Assist with loading/unloading stone slabs as needed
Other duties as assigned
Level II
All Level I duties plus:
Mastery of at least one fabrication machine (e.g., bridge saw, CNC router, waterjet)
Cross-trained on multiple fabrication machines
Solid knowledge of stone material types and fabrication tolerances
Capable of reading fabrication shop drawings and production schedules
Other duties as assigned
Level III
All Level II duties plus:
Expert in machine troubleshooting, calibration, and minor repairs
Advanced understanding of different stone characteristics and how they respond to cutting/polishing
Serves as a mentor or lead to junior operators
Supports training and onboarding of new team members
Other duties as assigned
Skills & Competencies
Level I
High school diploma or GED required; technical training preferred
13 years of experience in a fabrication or machine operation role
Basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with tools/machinery
Ability to read tape measures and use basic hand tools
Level II
35 years of experience in stone countertop fabrication
Ability to manage work based on production schedules
Familiar with fabrication software or digital readouts
Strong communication and problem-solving skills
Level III
5+ years of experience operating multiple fabrication machines
Proficient in advanced fabrication techniques and edge profiles
Demonstrated leadership, training, or mentoring experience
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, and bend for 8+ hours per shift
Able to lift and carry 50+ lbs regularly
Comfortable working in a loud, dusty, and physically demanding environment
Must wear required PPE at all times
