GROUNDS EQUIPMENT OPERATOR BASIC FUNCTION: Under supervision, operate medium and large motorized equipment used in mowing and trimming grass, moving dirt, and transporting materials and equipment; operate motor vehicles; and perform related duties as required. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Operate medium equipment, such as gang power lawn mowers, tractors, skip loaders, dump trucks, graders, and cherry pickers in maintaining and preparing grounds; 2. Haul trash, sand, soil, rock and blacktop; 3. Inspect, adjust, lubricate, and maintain mowing equipment; 4. Sharpen blades on power equipped mowers and edgers; 5. Plan and prepare grounds for planting new grass for athletic fields and other lawn areas; 6. Plant lawns, shrubs, and trees; 7. Use power spray rig to spray herbicides; 8. Mix and apply chemicals for weed control; 9. Participate in other grounds maintenance activities, such as pruning shrubs and trees; 10. Operate grounds crew equipment as assigned; and 11. Assist in the installation and restoration of sprinkler systems. KNOWLEDGE OF: 1. Operation, use and maintenance of grounds power equipment; 2. Methods, supplies, and tools used in landscaped areas; 3. Use of herbicides in an appropriate and safe manner; ABILITY TO: 1. Operate and service power equipment; 2. Follow verbal and written instructions; 3. Perform necessary physical activity; and 4. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. EXPERIENCE/TRAINING/EDUCATION: Any combination equivalent to: 1. High School Diploma or equivalent; and 2. One year of experience in grounds maintenance work, involving the use of power equipment. CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 1. Possession of a valid State of California Class A Driver's License.
