About the Role:
As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you'll help maintain the flow of daily waste disposal operations at the City's Transfer Station. You'll safely operate and maintain a variety of equipment and support other functions as needed. Key duties include:
Operating equipment such as:
Skid steers
Rubber-tired front-end loaders
Tandem dump trucks
Water trucks
Rubber-tired excavators and tampers
Ensuring safe and effective handling of waste material on site.
Assisting mechanics with basic maintenance and repairs of equipment when necessary.
Following all safety procedures and verbal/written instructions from supervisors.
Performing physical labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds and working on uneven terrain.
Working outdoors in all weather conditions.
This job is Non-Exempt and is subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
This position also requires:
A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
The ability to obtain Certified Landfill Operator and Certified Transfer Station Operator credentials through NC-SWANA.
Flexibility with scheduling, including changes due to operational demands.
Reliable communication (home or cell phone) and consistent attendance.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
High School diploma/GED, with 1+ years of experience operating heavy equipment such as a backhoe, front-end loader, excavator, or skid steer
No High School diploma/GED, requires at least 3 years of High School education plus 5+ years of experience operating heavy equipment such as a backhoe, front-end loader, excavator, or skid steer
Valid Driver's License
Commercial Driver's License ("OR" the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Class A or B Commercial Driver's License;
- Experience in landfill or transfer station environment
