About the Role:

As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you'll help maintain the flow of daily waste disposal operations at the City's Transfer Station. You'll safely operate and maintain a variety of equipment and support other functions as needed. Key duties include:

  • Operating equipment such as:

  • Skid steers

  • Rubber-tired front-end loaders

  • Tandem dump trucks

  • Water trucks

  • Rubber-tired excavators and tampers

  • Ensuring safe and effective handling of waste material on site.

  • Assisting mechanics with basic maintenance and repairs of equipment when necessary.

  • Following all safety procedures and verbal/written instructions from supervisors.

  • Performing physical labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds and working on uneven terrain.

  • Working outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • This job is Non-Exempt and is subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)

This position also requires:

  • A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

  • The ability to obtain Certified Landfill Operator and Certified Transfer Station Operator credentials through NC-SWANA.

  • Flexibility with scheduling, including changes due to operational demands.

  • Reliable communication (home or cell phone) and consistent attendance.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma/GED, with 1+ years of experience operating heavy equipment such as a backhoe, front-end loader, excavator, or skid steer

  • No High School diploma/GED, requires at least 3 years of High School education plus 5+ years of experience operating heavy equipment such as a backhoe, front-end loader, excavator, or skid steer

  • Valid Driver's License

  • Commercial Driver's License ("OR" the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Class A or B Commercial Driver's License;
  • Experience in landfill or transfer station environment
