About this Position
The overall function of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance. This position is located in District 62, Livingston Parish, Unit 540 (Walker Maintenance Unit), of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to Highway Foreman 1. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or without minimal supervision and able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate inappropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks. "While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives."

50% Operates the following heavy equipment, as needed:
+ Asphalt Distributor (truck mounted)
+ Backhoes
+ Front end loaders
+ Bucket/ladder trucks
+ Cranes/draglines (lifting capacity >20,000 lbs but <40,000>40,000>
+ Dozers (<140>140>
+ Dump truck (tandem axle or trailer dump)
+ Gradalls
+ Hot mix pavers (<40>40>
+ Lowboys
+ Milling machines (<90>90>
+ Road planer
+ Road widener (<90>90>
+ Sewer Cleaners (truck mounted)
+ Striping machines
+ Sweepers
+ Track hoes (excavators)
+ Under bridge inspection units (trailer mounted)
+ Winch Truck
+ Motor Patrol/Grade
25% Performs maintenance tasks on DOTD right of ways including, but not limited to, loading/ unloading materials at the parish units and/ or jobsite, removing fallen trees, pushing trees/ debris after major storms, removing dead animals from DOTD right of way, cleaning cross drain culverts, cleaning side drain culverts, cleaning subsurface drainage pipe, cleaning all types of box culverts, grading ditches, sweeping highways, and grading shoulders. Incumbent will also perform hauling maintenance materials such as asphalt, cold planed asphalt, dirt, sand, gravel, trash, fallen trees, and removed concrete. Prior to equipment operation, conducts routine visual/ physical safety inspection of equipment and reports problems to supervisor/ appropriate personnel and/ or takes necessary corrective action wherever possible. This includes performing routine maintenance and making minor repairs to equipment as needed to keep equipment in a clean and good safe working order. Prepares any necessary paperwork (e.g. mileage reports, oil/ gas usage/ etc.) as directed. Operates a variety of lower-level equipment including, but not limited to, skid steer loader, roller, sand spreader, five-yard dump trucks, tractors with 15 ft. bush hog, boom tractor with attachment, and side mount tractor with bush hog. Equipment usage is determined by the nature of the project.
20% Operates small, motorized equipment such as chainsaws and pole saws used for cutting fallen trees and low hanging limbs on DOTD right of ways. Attends required training in accordance with the departments structured training program. Provides guidance to and oversee work of lower-level operators, acts as a lead worker, and completes daily work reports for crew in foremans absence. Maintains class A CDL, reports CDL revocation to appropriate personnel in accordance with the departments commercial drivers license policy (PPM#25). Must obtain and maintain SOCL instructor certification on assigned equipment. May perform any tasks required by transportation, maintenance, and construction missions.
5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.
Position-Specific Details:

The work schedule for this position is, 10-hour days, 4 days a week, off Monday or Friday. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Mobile Equipment Operator 1, Mobile Equipment Operator 2, or Mobile Equipment Operator 1-Heavy depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). This position may be filled as a Probationary Appointment requiring 12-24 months on probation.
MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 1 Valid Louisiana drivers license will be required upon appointment.
Starting salary for MEO-1 is $16.06/hour with an additional $1.00/hour for all hours worked.
Additionally, a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status.
MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 2 - Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required upon appointment.
Starting salary for MEO-2 is $17.18/hour with an additional $1.00 for all hours worked .
Additionally, a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status.
MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 1/HEAVY - Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required upon appointment.
Starting salary for MEO 1-HEAVY is $21.05/hour .
