Position Overview\:
Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities, the Licensed Plumber is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of all plumbing and natural gas systems throughout the Barnstable County Correctional Facility campus, which includes multiple buildings of varying age, design, and system types. The plumber must be able to work on both modern and legacy plumbing infrastructure. This position requires the ability to pull permits and perform licensed plumbing and gas work in accordance with Massachusetts state codes. The ideal candidate is highly collaborative, safety-minded and skilled in diagnostics and repairs across a wide range of systems.
Key Responsibilities\:
· Install, maintain, and repair plumbing and natural gas systems across multiple facility buildings, including inmate housing, administrative offices, medical units, kitchens, and laundry facilities.
· Service and maintain plumbing infrastructure in buildings ranging in age and construction, requiring flexibility in working with diverse system layouts, materials, and historical configurations.
· Respond promptly to plumbing and gas emergencies, including clogged drains, broken pipes, frozen lines, gas leaks, and flooding.
· Conduct drain clearing using both mechanical and chemical methods on a regular basis.
· Perform pump and motor change-outs (circulator pumps, sewage ejectors, domestic water pumps, etc.) as part of system maintenance and emergency response.
· Work with gas piping systems including installations and repairs for gas fired appliances, water heaters and regulators in compliance with Massachusetts gas code.
· Pull plumbing and gas permits and coordinate with local inspectors for compliance and sign-off.
· Collaborate with a team of facility maintenance professionals, including electricians, HVAC techs, and carpenters, on both scheduled work and emergency repairs.
· Perform preventive maintenance and inspections of plumbing and gas systems across buildings with different construction eras, plumbing layouts, and system types.
· Accurately document work completed, inspections and parts used
· Perform light general maintenance such as carpentry, ceiling repair, flooring, painting, and electrical support as needed.
· Assist with estimating labor and material costs for repair and renovation projects.
· Maintain inventory of plumbing and gas related tools, parts and safety equipment.
· Follow all security and safety procedures applicable to work inside a correctional facility.
· Other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities or Designee. Minimum Qualifications\:
· Valid Massachusetts Master Plumber License (Required)
· Current Massachusetts Gasfitter License (Required)
· Authorized to pull plumbing and gas permits in Massachusetts
· Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check and maintain correctional facility clearance
· Physical ability to perform hands on work include lifting, climbing, kneeling, and working in confined spaces
Preferred Qualifications\:
· 3+ years of experience in commercial, institutional, or multi-building facilities preferred
· Strong experience working on plumbing systems in buildings with varying age, design, and mechanical infrastructure
· Experience with a wide range of piping materials\: PVC, CPVC, PEX, copper, cast iron, and black iron pipe
· Experience in grease trap maintenance and cleaning in commercial/institutional kitchens
· Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and system schematics
· Strong communication skills and a proven team first attitude
