The Commercial Electrical Inspector is responsible for overseeing and inspecting electrical systems in commercial buildings to ensure compliance with electrical codes, regulations, and safety standards. The role involves conducting inspections, preparing detailed reports, and providing technical guidance to both contractors and junior inspectors. The senior inspector is expected to handle complex inspection tasks and ensure that all electrical installations meet or exceed local and national safety standards.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesConduct Electrical Inspections:
- Perform detailed inspections of electrical systems in commercial buildings, including wiring, circuit breakers, transformers, and other electrical components.
- Ensure compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), local building codes, and safety regulations.
- Review and verify electrical plans, schematics, and diagrams submitted for compliance with local codes.
- Assess electrical work during various stages of construction to ensure proper installation and adherence to project specifications.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, and project managers to resolve issues related to electrical systems.
- Advise contractors and builders on best practices for electrical installations.
- Offer recommendations for necessary changes or improvements to ensure safety and compliance.
- Prepare detailed inspection reports, including observations, violations, and corrective actions needed.
- Document findings clearly and concisely to communicate issues with clients, contractors, and relevant authorities.
- Track the progress of corrective actions and re-inspections.
- Ensure that all electrical systems meet safety standards and codes.
- Monitor and enforce regulations regarding electrical safety for both existing and new installations.
- Stay current with updates and changes to electrical codes, industry standards, and safety guidelines.
- Mentor junior electrical inspectors and provide guidance on difficult or complex inspections.
- Share knowledge of electrical systems, code interpretations, and best practices with less experienced team members.
- Work with various stakeholders, including contractors, engineers, architects, and building owners, to resolve issues and clarify compliance requirements.
- Communicate effectively with clients and management regarding inspection results and compliance status.
- Conduct final inspections and sign-offs for electrical systems once work is completed to ensure that installations are up to code.
- Review and evaluate the quality of electrical installations before giving final approval.
- Respond to emergency inspection requests to investigate electrical hazards or failures and determine corrective actions.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and five years of building trades and inspection experience
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Drivers license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Licensure in assigned building trade
- Certification as a Commercial Electrical Inspector (e.g., through the International Code Council, or similar accreditation body)
- Experience in managing or leading inspection teams
- Ability to work in high-pressure environments with tight deadlines
- Familiarity with commercial electrical systems, including large-scale installations and complex systems
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with contractors, clients, and colleagues
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), local electrical codes, building codes, and safety standards
- Proficient in reading blueprints, electrical schematics, and building plans. Knowledge of electrical systems, safety devices, and troubleshooting techniques
- High attention to detail in identifying code violations and ensuring safety
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to address complex electrical issues
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work, and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light work.
Working Conditions: Work is routinely performed in an indoor, office environment.
