About this opportunity:
The Senior Staff Electrical Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, reliability, compliance, and efficiency of Cenovus electrical systems from 24V to 260kV. This role will oversee electrical assets such as UPS systems, motors, drives, switchgear, substations, co-generation facilities, and transmission infrastructure. The Senior Staff Electrical Engineer will guide and design operational decisions and capability development.
This role will require travel to the field approximately 20% of the time.
What youll do:Serve as a senior technical authority on electrical safety programs, procedures, field practices and provide SME support and leadership during system planning, troubleshooting, and risk assessments
Design, commission, test, and operate new electrical systems, while identifying and implementing improvements to current systems to enhance safety, strengthen system reliability, optimize operational performance, and reduce lifecycle costs
Be responsible for the application and continuous improvement of electrical GIS models and ETAP studies to support operational decision-making and construction planning
Develop and maintain electrical engineering standards, guidelines, and practices to support safe and reliable execution, contributing to industry working groups and standards committees (e.g., CSA, IEEE, APEGA) to influence emerging codes and standard processes
Lead the development, evaluation, and execution of comprehensive electrical contingency plans to ensure system resilience under normal and abnormal operating conditions.
Assess failure modes, identify system vulnerabilities, and implement mitigation strategies, assisting in audit preparation and compliance program development
Assess electrical system risks, provide technical leadership, and justify investments in risk reduction and long-term asset optimization
Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:
Legally authorized to work in Canada
Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering
P.Eng. designation in good standing with APEGA and/or APEGS
16+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience, with a focus on high-voltage power systems (25kV to 260kV), generation, transmission, distribution, and utilization in complex industrial environments
Mastery level of knowledge in: hazardous area classification, electrical safety programs, power system planning and optimization, equipment reliability and asset management
Proficiency with engineering tools (ETAP, SKM), GIS models, and enterprise data systems
Prior experience supporting SAGD and heavy oil operations is an asset
We acknowledge the value of transferrable skills and may consider equivalent combinations of experience and education should you not meet a specific requirement.
For this position you will be required to maintain a Class 5 driver's license, a satisfactory driving record, and adhere to the appropriate Company policies and guidelines. A driver's abstract will be one of the background checks requested in the pre-employment screening for the final candidate.
